Patented Dec UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER MONAUGHTON, CHARLOTTE, MICHIGAN.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,977, dated December 18, 1900.
To aZZ whom, it may concern: 7 Be it known that '1, PETER MONAUGHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte,in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention is an improved plow, and relates particularly to the beam and to means for adjusting the same so that its front .end may be raised and lowered. and for securing the beam at any desired adjustment, thereby enabling thevplow to'be used ine'ithe'r hard or soft ground and to be run at any desired depth in the soil.- V
My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices herein after fully set forth and pointed out in the claims. V
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a plow embodying my i mprovements, a portion of the moldboard and one of the handles being removed. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same, partly in section, on the plane indicated by the line an. of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking and adjusting cam.
In theembodiment of my inventionhere shown the beam 1 of the plow is curved in the usual manner and formed integrally with the standard 2, which standard bears against the inner side of the landside-plate 3 of the plow and is pivotally connected thereto by a bolt 4, which passes transversely through an opening in the heel of the standard and is secured in the opening in the landside-plat-e. The latter is further provided with an adjustingslot 5, which is curved and is concentric with the axis of the pivotal bolt 4. A- bolt 6 is disposed in an opening in the said standard which registers with said slot 5, and said bolt operates in'said slot and is provided with the usual tap or nut 7, by means of which the beam may be set at any desired adjustment. A disk 8 is journaled 011 a bolt 9'and bears against the rear side of the standard or down turned rear portion of the beam, the said disk being adapted to be partly rotated on the said bolt 9, and the said disk is provided on its front side with a cam 10, the front side of whichis curved and is eccentrically disposed on the disk. The shape of the said cam is such that the front portion of the disk forms Application filed ober 1, 1900. serial No. 31,700. (No model.)
a wedge which bears against the rear side of the standard or downturned rear portion of the, beam, relieves the adj listing-bolt 6 of strain, and supportsthe said beam when adjusted. Prior to the adjustment of the beam the same maybe predetermined by turning the disk 8 to the requisite extent, the bolt 6 being tightened after the beam has been ad It will be understood that the ad-.
justed. justing-bolt 6 and cam-disk 8 coact to set and hold or retain the beam at any required adjustment. It will be observed by reference to'the drawings that the front side of the disk 8, by reason of its being provided with the cam 10, is heavier than the rear side thereof and that the cam tends by gravity to work downward against the rear side of the standard or downturned rear portion of the beam, and hence to counteract any tendency of the bolt 6 to work loose. j
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction an d combination of devices here in shown and described, as modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
While the cam forms a wedge that bears against the rear side of the standard portion of the beam, another form of wedge might be employed in lieu of the cam for the same purpose, as is evident. Other suitable means may, within the scope of my invention, be employed to brace the standard and relieve the adjusting-bolt of stress, and I do not limit myself inthis particular.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of a plow having an adjusting-slot, a beam having its standard portion pivoted to the plow so that the front end of the beam may be raised and lowered, an adj usting-bolt transversely disposed in said beam and working in said slot, and a revoluble disk mounted in rear of the beam-standard and having an eccentrically-disposed cam on its front side bearing against the rear side of the standard portion of the beam, said camdisk and adj Listing-bolt coacting to secure the beamat any required adjustment, and said cam disk relieving said adjustingbolt of stress, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a plow, a beam pivoted thereto, and thereby rendered capable of adjustment so that the front end of the beam may be raised and lowered, an adjust-- ing-bolt, extending transversely through the standard portion of the beam and through the plow, and acam bearing against the rear side of the standard portion of the beam, said cam and bolt eoaeting to secure and adjust the beam, and said cam relieving said adjusting-bolt of stress, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a plow, a standard pivoted thereto, for the purpose set forth, an
adjusting-bolt transversely disposed in the plow and standard and connecting the same together, and acam bearing against the rear side of the standard and relieving the said
