Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OONSTANTINE A. HEGE, OF SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 62,549, dated April 27, 1875; application filed March 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GONSTANTINE A. HEGE, of the town of Salem, county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented an Improvement in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a portion of the plowbearn secured against a portion of the plowstandard. Fig. 2 represents the adjustingplate grooved on the side next to the standard. Fig. 3 represents the grooved-plate on the side next to beam, having teats attached and the wedges. Fig. at represents a portion of the standard, with the grooves and slots.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of plows which contain a backward slanting standard, which is used to prevent the plow from choking with grass or weeds which may be upon the land, and my invention is intended to render this class of plows perfectly adjustable, so as to suit the various conditions of the soil, whereby the plow can be made to run deep or shallow, or to take more or less land, as the plowman may desire, without changing the position of the handles; also to secure the beam and standard firmly together, so as to take all the strain off the screw securing the rear end of beam to the handles.
The beam H is constructed of one solid piece of timber, to which the groooed iron A is firmly secured by means of the teats F E,-
which are let in the beam by means of a mortise which exactly fits the teats F F. On the other side of grooved iron A, there are grooves 0, all centering at the point where the rear end of beam is secured to the handles, so that bea m H can be easily raised or lowered to any point desired, and yet fit in the grooves K, in the standard B, all of which have their center at the same point. The standard B is secured firmly against the grooved iron A by means of a cuff passing around grooved iron A and beam H, then through the slots D D in standard B, and is tightened and screwed by nuts E E on the opposite side of standard B from beam. The standard B is curved so as to form a true circle corresponding with the flanges a a on grooved iron A, so as to admit of the beam H being raised or lowered without entirely removing the nuts E E. Two wedges are placed betw en the grooved iron A and the beam H, thereby causing the plow to take more or less land, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The plate A, having the lugs F F on its back, and concentric horizontal grooves 0 between curved vertical flange a a. on its face side, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The standard B, of the shape described and shown, having the horizontally-concentric grooves K and the curved vertical slots D, as set forth.
3. The combination of the plate A, standard B, cuff b, beam H, and wedges c c, all constructed and arranged, as and for the purpose set forth.
G. A. HEGE.
