UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMILE BOULANGER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
DUPLEX TIGHTENING DRUM-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 663,855, dated Dec mb 18, 1900.
Application filed June 11,1900. Serial No. 19,938. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMILE BOULANGER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplex Tightening Drum- Rods, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to duplex tighteningrods for drums; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a drum, showing my improved tightening-rod as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the arrangement of the tightening-rod as applied to the drum. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective, showing the construc tion of the tightening-rod.
In the construction of this invention as shown I provide a rod 1 of the desired length, formed integral with each end of which is an enlargement or head 2, and formed in the rod near each end thereof is a plurality of notches 3, those at each end being arranged diametrically opposite from each other. The rod constructed as described is inserted a suitable distance within the tubes 4., after which the tubes are compressed around the rods in the manner shown in Fig. 2. By being compressed portions of the tubes are forced into the notches 3 and other portions are pressed around the heads 2, thereby holding the rod rigidly in the adjustment in which it is placed. After being arranged as described the tubes at are inserted in the usual manner in apertures in the posts 5, carried by the shell 6 of the drum.
are held in position by the screws 7, applied as shown, the outer ends of the screws entering apertures in the tubes, thereby holding them in position in the posts 5. The posts 5 are arranged in vertical alinement with the brackets 8, which are carried by the rims 9 of the drum. The threaded rods 1.0 are passed through apertures in the brackets, the inner ends of the said rods being threaded into the tubes at at each end of the drum, thereby holding the parts in the adjustment shown in Fig. 1.
A tightening-rod constructed as described obviates the necessity of using solder or similar connecting means, while at the same time the connection has been found to be more firmly retained and is not liable to become broken or otherwise injured, as is the case when solder is used.
I claim In a drum, a tightening device consisting of the central rod 1 having an integral head 2 at each end, notches 3 formed in said rod adjacent to the said heads, a tube 4 compressed closely around the ends of the rods and being swaged into the said notches 3, posts 5 for supporting the said tubes, and screwbolts 10 supported in brackets 8 secured to the rims of the drum for securing the posts of the drum together, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMILE BOULANGER.
