SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,198, dated March 2, 1897. Application tiled November 9, 1893. Serial No. 611,493. (No model.)

Be it known that I, EMILE BOULANGER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful lmproveinents in Drums, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the' accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to drums; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement ot' parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved drum. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the indicated line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 0 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 6 G of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a sectional View taken approximately on the line 7 7 of Fig. 2.
1n the construction of a drum in accordance with the principles of my present invention the shell is made of two pieces, consisting of the hoops 19 and 11. The batter-head 12 is secured in position relative to the hoop 11 by means of the rim 13, and the snare-head 14 issecured in position relative to the hoop by means of the rim 15. The brackets 16 are secured to the outer face of the rim 13 by means of the screws 17, and the brackets 1S are secured in position against the outer face of the rim 15 by means of the screws 19.
The posts 2O project outwardlyfroin the outer face of the hoop 11. The washers 21 are inserted between the'ends of the posts 2O and the outer face of the hoop 11, and similar washers 22 are placed against the inner face of the hoop 11, and the screws 23 are inserted from the inside of the hoop 11 through the washers 22, then through said hoop 11, then through the washers 217 and are screwseated in the posts 20, thus holding said posts securely in position.`
The posts 24 are secured to the outer face of the hoop 10 and correspond to the posts in every respect. The posts 2O and 24 are placed in vertical alinement.
The tubes or sockets 25 are inserted through corresponding ones of the posts 20 and 24, and said tubes have apertures which receive the inner ends or points of the screws 23, as shown in Fig. 4, thus holding said sockets securely in position in said posts. The posts 2O and 24 are placed in vertical alineinent with the brackets 1G and 13, and the upper half-rods 26 are inserted through the brackets 1G and screw-seated in the upper ends of the tubes 25. The lower half-rods 27 are inserted through the brackets 13 and screwseated in the lower ends of the tubes 25. The posts 2O and 24 are placed suoli a distance apart upon the tubes 25 that an opening 28 is formed between the adjacent edges of the hoops 1() and 11, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4.
The snare-strings 29 are passed through the leather plate 3() and then back through said plate in the usual way, and the ends of said strings are passed through the slot 31 in the hoop 19, and under the snare-head 14, and then out through the slot 32 in the opposite side ot' the rim 10, and said ends are engaged by a clamp The clamp 33 consists of the inner bar 34 and the outer bar 35, between which the ends of the snare-strin gs are placed, and said bars are secured iirmly in position by means of the screws 36, which screws are inserted through the ends of the outer bar 35 and screw-seated in the ends of the inner bar 34.
The socket or tube 37 is inserted through the posts 33 and 39, and its lower end is screwseated in the outer bar 35 of the clamp 33, as shown in Fig. 4. The bracket 40 is secured to the outer face of the rim 13 in vertical alinement with the posts 3S and 39, and the half-rod 41 is inserted through said bracket 40 and screw-seated in the upper end of the socket 37. The snare-strings are tightened or loosened by manipulating the half-rod 41. The post 38 is secured to the hoop 10 by means of the screw 42 in the same manner as the posts 2O and 24 are secured by the screws 23. Formed in the socket 37 is a longitudinallyextending slot 42, and a block 42b is rotatably mounted upon the inner ends of the screws 2 and in position to slide in said slot 42, as required to prevent the socket 37 from turning in the bearings in the posts 3S and 39. The post 39 is secured to the hoop 1l in the same manner as the posts 2O and 24, with the exception that the screw which secures said post 3E) is shorter than the screws 23 and its point does not pass into the socket 37 or engage said socket, thus allowing said socket 37 to slide through said post 39. The hoops 10 and ll are each held in shape by means of the spiders 43 and 44. The spiders 4B`and 44 are essentially alike, and each is constructed as shown in plan view in Fig. 2.
A sheet-metal disk 45 forms the central portion of each of the spiders, andthe rods 46 are hooked into the disk and radiate from said disk. Each of the rods 4f) is covered with rubber tubing 47 to deaden the sound, and the outer ends of the rods are screw-threaded. The cylindrical sockets 48 are inserted through the hoops l0 and Il from the outside, and the flanges 49 upon the outer ends of said sockets form heads to prevent said sockets from passing into the drum, said heads engaging the hoops. The sockets 4S are interiorly screw-threaded to receive the screwthreaded ends ot' the rods 4G, as shown in Fig. 6, and the inner ends 50 of the screw-threaded apertures through the sockets are bored out, thus termin g a shell for the protect-ion of the screw-threads upon the ends of the rods.
In the outer ends of the sockets 4S are fo 1med transverse slots to receive a screw driver for operating said sockets. By the manipulation of the sockets 48 the hoops are stiffened and kept in shape, that is, they are prevented from iiattening. rlhe operation of the construction just described is obvious and need not be repeated.
The distance between the snare-head I4 and the batter-head I2 may be adjusted by substituting longer or shorter tubes 25 or by making apertures in said tubes to receive the points of the screws 23, thus allowing the posts 2O and 24 to be adjusted toward or away from each other upon said tubes 25.
I claiml. In a drum, a shell consisting of two par allel hoops, posts projecting from said hoops, tension-rods mounted with their tubular portions passing through said posts and means of securin g said tubular portions to said posts whereby said hoops are held rigidly in position relative to each other, substantially as specified.
2. In a drum, a shell consisting of two hoops placed in parallel positions, posts placed with their ends against the outerface of said hoops, tension-rods mounted with their tubular portions inserted through said posts and screws inserted from the inner 'face of said hoops through said posts and engaging said tubular portions as required tohold said tubular portions securely in position relative to said posts, substantially as specified.
3. In a drum, means of stiffening the shell, which means consists of a disk centrally located, rods extending radially from said disk and having screw-threaded outer ends, and
sockets rotatably mounted in the shell of the drum and engaging said screw-threaded outer ends, substantially as specified.
4. In a drum, means ot' stiftening the shell, which means consists of a disk centrally located, rods extending radially from said disk and having screw-threaded outer ends, sockets rotatably mounted in the shell of the drum and engaging said screw-threaded outer ends; and a suitable covering for said rods whereby the sound is deadencd, substantially as specified.
5. In a drum, a shell consisting of two parallel hoops, means of holding said hoops rigidly in position relative to each other, and means of stit'fening said shell; which means consists of a disk centrally located, rods extending radially from said disk and having scrcw-threaded outer ends, and sockets rotatably mounted in the shell ot the drum and engaging said screw-threaded outer ends, substantially as specified.
(i. In a drum, a shell consisting of two parallel hoops, means of holding said hoops rigidly in position relative to cach other and means ot' stiffening said shell; which means consists of a disk centrally located, rods extending radially 'from said disk and having screw-threaded outer ends, and sockets rotatably mounted in the shell ot` the drum and en gaging said screw-threaded outer ends; and a suitable covering for said rods whereby the sound is deadened, substantially as specified.
7. In a drum, the posts 2O and 24 mounted with their ends against the outer face of the shell, the tubes 25 mounted in the outer ends ot said posts and connecting said posts, and the screws 23 inserted from the inner face of the shell of the drum through said shell and into said posts and having their points engaging in apertures in said tubes, substantially as specified.

In a drum, the washers 2l placed against the outer face of the drum-shell, the washers placed against the inner face oi the drumshell and in alinement with said washers L the posts 2O and 24 placed with their ends against the washers 2l, the tubes 25 placed in bearings in the outer ends of said posts 2t) and 24, the screws 23 inserted from the inside of the drum-shell through the washers 22, through the drum-shell, through the washers 2l and screw-seated in said posts 2O and and 24 and having their points engaging in apertures in said tubes 25, brackets attached to the tension-rims ot the drum, and tcnsionrods operating in said brackets and screwseated in the ends of said tubes, substantially as specified.
