'arnur SIDNEY S. ARNOLD, OF CALAMUS, IOWA.
COMBINED REFRIGERATOR AND iVHLK COOLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,843, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed August 17, 1900. Serial No. 27,173. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY S. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Oalamus, Clinton county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin a Combined Refrigerator and Milk-Cooler, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in refrigerators; and the object of my invention is to provide a case for the reception of cans or other receptacles containing liquids, in combinaiion with a box adapted to contain butter or other materials, so arranged that the contents of both the cans and box are cooled by means of water filling the spaces in the I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the case. Fig. 2 is a top view of the box and case as it appears after the removal of the cover, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the line 00 0c of Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents a case whose open top is provided with a cover D. Suspended within suitable supports within the case A is the box B, preferably constructed with thin metallic sides. A vent E is provided at the top of the box B to allow egress of heated air arising from warm articles placed in said box for cooling. The box B may be furnished with any desirable form of supporting slats, shelves, or partitions to carry butter or other comestibles to be cooled. The braces N are adapted to support the upper walls of the case A. Suitable spaces I I are arranged for in either end of the case A for the accommodation of milkcans or other receptacles and are filled with water. The box Bis so suspended within the case A that the water may freely circulate over and under it. The water surrounds the box on all but the front side.
0 represents the door of the box B and is fastened when shut by means of the hasp P.
F and G are tubes fitted within an end wall of the case A at the top and bottom thereof. They are provided with faucets, whereby water may be introduced into the case or drawn therefrom.
The box B may be used for cooling articles of food in the usual manner, but is intended especially for the refrigerating of butter. On removal of the cover D milk-cans, as at L, or any other description of receptacle may be placed in the water in the spaces 1. In operation when the box B has received its contents the water surrounding the thin walls of the ice-box cools them. The contents of the cans are also similarly cooled. When the Water becomes warm, it may be drawn off through the tube G.
If desired, by making proper connections a continuous current of cool water may be kept in circulation within the case A through the vents F and Gr, as shown by the dotted lines W W.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a refrigerator, the combination with a water-tight case having a cold-waterinlet near its top and an outlet near its bottom, a cover therefor, and a series of cans for milk or the like disposed in compartment-s near the ends of the case; of a box within the case at its center and comprising a top and bottom, two sides, and a back built into the case and spaced from the corresponding parts thereof,-
and a door in the front of the case comprising the only inlet to said box around five of whose sides the cooling-water flows.
2. In a refrigerator, the combination with a water-tight case having a cold-Waterinlet near its top and an outlet near its bottom, a cover therefor, and a series of cans for milk or the like disposed in compartments near the ends of the case; of a box within the case at its center and comprising a top and bottom, two sides, and a back built into the case and spaced from the corresponding parts thereof, a vent rising from the top of the box and standing beneath the cover of the case, and a door in the front of the case comprisingthe only inlet to said box around five of whose sides the cooling-water fiows.
Signed at Oalamus, Iowa, this 13th day of August, 1900.
SIDNEY S. ARNOLD.
