Description

@nimh gisten gallant @Hita ALVIN o. MASoN, '0E BoSToN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOE To. HIMSELE' AND n.11. (MASON, OE SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT.
Leners Patent No. 66,367, and July 2, 1567.`
IMPBOVED CLAMP POR SUSPENDING WHIPS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Bc it known that I, ALVIN C. MASON, of Boston, in the county of Sulol-k, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Clamp for Snspending Whips; and that `the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, hereinafter referred to, forms a fulland exact specication of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of mysaid improvements; by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire tohave secured,
to me by Letters Patent. l"
This invention relates to a 'new and improved clamp for suspending whips when not in use,`in order that the same may be kept straight and in proper shape. Horse-whips are very liable to become curved or bent, and lose their proper straight shape when not hung up after being used, `and the finer or more expensive class of whips are the soonest aifec'ted'by this negligence. l l
The object of my invention is to furnish a cheap clamp, which will admit of the whip being suspended in it by a very simple manipulation.
The accompanying drawing represents a front view of my invention. One only is shown, but a series ot them may beused, placed side by side, and `attached to a board or strip. Inlivery stables., where many whips` 'are used, this plan would undoubtedly be adopted.vr
A represents a board or wooden strip, which is nailed to the wallor to 4any suitable fixture, and B is aired jaw, screwed or nailed to the board or strip A, and C' is a jaw secured by a joint, a., to the fixed jaw B, or to the board or strip A, a spring, D, being between the two jaws to keep the lower ends of the same in contact;
said spring having a tendency to keep the lower end of the pivoted jaw C in contact with the lower end of the fixed jaw B, as will be fully understood by referring to the drawing. To the upper part of the jaw C there isa'ttached a cord, E, which passes through eyes on the upper part of the fixed jaw B, and extends down sui'-` ciently far to be within convenient reach of a person standing on the door of the apartment in which the clamp i is placed or secured. The clamp must be sufficiently high to `admit of the whip being suspended by its end or snapper in the clamp without having its butt in contact with the oor. In order to secure or suspend the whip in the clamp, the cord E is pulled down, and the lower end of the jaw C thereby drawn out from the fixed jaw "B, so that the Snapper or upper end of the whip may be inserted between the lower ends of, theV jaws, the cord being then released, so that the sprirrxgll)4 may` throw the lower end of jaw C towards thelower end ofthe jaw Brand firmly clamp thesnapper or upper end of the whip, as `shown clearly in the drawing, the whip being shown in red. .j
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A clamp for suspending whips, constructed with a pivoted or jointed jaw, one' or more, arranged so that the clamp may be opened by means of a cord, or its equivalent, to receive the upper end of a whip, substantially as shown and described.
ALVIN C. MASON.
