SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,647, dated December 11, 1900.

To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spectacle or Eyeother part and a spring for closing and hold-- ing closed the hinged part and means having an engaging portion on the outer surface of the case for opening and holding open the hinged part for the removal or insertion of the glasses.
My invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruction of myimproved eyeglass or spectacle case, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of an eyeglass-case embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the case at a point indicated by line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, same figure, showing the hinged part open; and Fig. 3 shows a modified form of the case shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the accompanying drawings the eyeglasscase shown is preferably made of metal, which may be covered with leather in the ordinary way, and consists of the body portion 1 and the part or lid 2, hinged at one edge to the body portion 1, in this instance by a rod or pintle 3, secured at its ends to the inner side of the body portion 1 and extending through the turned-in portion or lip 2' on the lid 2.
In connection with the body portion 1 of the case and the lid 2, hinged thereto, I employ means combined with the body portion 1 and the lid 2 for raising or opening the lid 2 and holding it open, as shown in Fig. 2, and for closing the lid and holding it closed, as shown in Fig. 1, said means having an engaging surface on the outer side of the case to be operated by the user. In this instance the means employed for opening and closing the lid consist of a spring 4, which is preferably made of the shape shown by broken lines in Figs. 1 and 3,-having its separated ends 4: secured by rivets 6 upon the inner side of the body portion of the case. The free end of the spring 4 has a projection or knob 5 there on which extends through an opening in the body portion of the case, at the edge thereof contiguous to the hinged edge of the lid 2. The knob 5 has its end open to receive a projection 2, extending rearwardly from the lid 2 and forming a cam-surface for the knob 5 to engage and act on to raise the lid 2, as shown in Fig. 2. The knob 5 extends upon the outer surface of the case and furnishes an engag ing surface to be engaged by the user and pressed inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. When the user releases the knob 5, the free end of the spring 4 acts to raise it and through its engagement with the projection 2 on the lid 2 close and hold closed said lid, as shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified shape of the case shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which the hinged lid extends lengthwise of the case, as shown. The spring attachment for opening and closing the lid is the same as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The advantages of my improved spectacle and eyeglass case will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art. I provide means for opening and holding open the lid, which means are operated by the user through an engaging surface on the outer surface of the case and also means for closing and holding closed the lid.
It will be understood that the details of construction of my improved eyeglass or spectabody portion and provided with an open ended knob or projection movable in the said slotof the body portion, said open-ended movement of the spring and knob imparts knob orprojection being in the plane of the positive movement to the lid to open and close lid when closed the said lid being provided the same.
