Be it known that I, CHARLES KING, ot`l\iorristow n, in the county offMorris and State of New Jerseyhave invented a new and improved Oar-Replacer, and that the following description taken, in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter Vreferred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles oi' my said improvements, Aby which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to ine by Letters Patent. l i
This invention relates to a new and improved means for replacing cars upon a railroad track after they have casually run off from the same. i
IIlhe invention consists of an inclined plane provided with a pivoted rail in connection with another inclined plane without a pivoted rail, both inclined planes being secured to the railsof the track and all arranged in such a manner that an engine or car may be moved or readjusted upon the rails of the track from etherside thereof.4
The invention also consists in the application of anchors or clamps to the rails in connection with cables er chains and a windlass, all arranged as hereinafter fully shown andidescribe'd, whereby the engine can, in case of the slipping of the driving-wheels, or the setting of thesamevbetween therails ofthe track, draw itself. upon the latter. In the accompanying sheet of drawingsl Figure 1 is aplan or top view of my invention.
Figure 2, a transverse section of the same taken in the line :r: fr, iig. 1.
Figure 3, a transverse section of aportion of the same taken in the line yy., tig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
'A A represent the rails of a track, and B B are two inclined. planes, attached to one side thereof by clamps C, as shown clearly in g. 2., One of these inclined planes Bfhas a rail, D,pivoted to it, asV shown at a, and this pivoted rail extends from beyond the lower edge of the inclined plane Bland laps over or upon the rail A to which said inclined plane is attached, as will be. fully understood by referring to iig, 1. The otherinclined plane B is not provided with a pivoted rail, D, it not being necessary. This oiice of this pivoted rail, :it'rwill be seen, is to carry the flange of the wheel over the rail A, and the object in having the rail D secured to the inclined planeB by a pivot, is to admit of .D being adjusted to either side of B', according to which rail A it is necessary to-apply B. The device therefore may be applied to the track so as to admit of an engine or car being replaced thereon from either side. In case the Wheels of an engine slip on the track or when 0E from the track, inthe eii'ort to work itself or an attached car, either or both upon the track, I employ anchors or clamps, and a windlass to overcome the above-mentioned diiiculty, The anchors are constructed of metal arms E E, secured horizontally by pivot-bolts b in bars F F, which are vsecured to the inner sides ofv the rails A A by clamps, G, constructed in any way which will admit of the bars being )eadily applied to' and detached from the rails. Each arm has a cable or chain, II, attached to it by a hook, I, and lthese cables or chains aresecured to a windlass, J, which is placedon the front axle of the engine. By this arrangement it will be seen that the engine will be able to draw itselt'nponthe track or rails.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent# 1. The` inclined planes B D', in combinaton'with the pivoted rail D onV B', and the clamps (hall constructed substantially in the manner as and for the purpose set forth, y
2. The arms or anchors E, iitted or 'pivotedin bars F, clamped to the rails A A, in combination with the cables or chains H, and the windless ,I on the axle of the engine, said partsbeing arranged substantially in the manner as and for the purpose specified.v
` CHARLES KING.
