MUSIC NOTATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 663,512, dated December 11, 1900.
Application led July 3,1899. Serial No. 722,641. (No specimens.)
To @ZZ whom it Uta/y concern:
Be it known that I, GIDEON L. PETERSON, a citizen of lthe United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and Siate of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Music Notation, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in music notation; and the main object of my invention is the provision of a simple method of writing music by a novel arrangement of numerals, as herein described, shown, and claimed.
In the drawing I have illustrated a number of bars of Ho1ne, Sweet Home, written With a bass-line and an accompaniment, which vis played as follows: I rst pick the strings or strike the keys S and 9 of the upper (soprano) line singly, then l0 of the same line, and simultaneously therewith I pick or strike 1 and simultaneously therewith 3 and 5 three times, the numeral 3 above the horizontal bar signifying how many times the numerals 3 and 5 below the bar are to be picked or struck. I then pick the string or strike the key Il of the upper (soprano) line, and simultaneously therewith I pick or strike l in the bass-line, and as an accompaniment therefor pick or strike 4 and 6 three times, as before described, the numeral above the bar indicating how many times the figures below the bar are to be played.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Tlie herein-described and shown music notation, written in a single horizontal space, an upper horizontal line of numerals arranged in said space denoting the notes of the soprano, another line of horizontal numbers below the soprano-numbers denoting the bass, and the accompaniment in the same line as the bass-numbers and consisting of a short horizontal line having numbers below the line denoting the chord to be played and having a single number above the line to denote the number of times the chord is to be repeated.
