SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 663,184, dated December 4, 1900.

To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known thatA I, WILLIAM MORRIS, of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new andv useful Improvements in Rotary Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,- and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to rotary pumps, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of cylinder and piston and valve mechanism therefor, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and speciically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure l is a central vertical sectional view of the pump. Fig. 2 is acrosssectional view. Fig. 3 is a side elevational view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the eccentric and connecting parts.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a cylinder which comprises a ring 2, with cylinder- heads 3 and 4, secured thereto. The cylinder interiorly is cylindrical and is provided at one side and adjacent the top thereof with a prolongation or extension 5, forming a valvechamber, the purpose of which will be hereinafter stated.
The piston 6 is approximately of oval form and has its oppositely-disposed tips or point extremities 7 bearing against the cylinderwall, so as to make a liquid-tight connection. This piston is mounted upon a main shaft 8, having bearings in the cylinder-heads and provided at one end with a crank-wheel 9, which may be driven either by means of a handle 10 or by machinery by the interposi- Lion of a pitman, and at the other end with a gear-wheel 1l.
12 designates an auxiliary shaft having bearings in one of the cylinder-heads and a bearingbracket 13 projecting therefrom. This shaft is provided with a gear-wheel 14, of less diameter than the said gear-wheel 11, on the main shaft and meshing-therewith, the gearing ratio being in the present instance two to one, so that the auxiliary shaft will make two revolutions to a single revolution of the main shaft.
The cylinder is provided at the lower end thereof with an induction-pipe 15 for the inlet of water or other material to be pumped thereinto. The said cylinderis also provided at the upper end thereof,- adjoining the point of intersection of the cylinder proper with the valve-chamber, with an eduction-pipe lo.
17 represents a valve or abutment mounted on a shaft 18 in the valve-chamber and provided with a substantially shoe-shaped end,
the toe or point extremity 19 of which is adapt-- ed to normally bear against the periphery of the piston and prevent backflow of water or other liquid pumped up and forced through the eduction-pipe. Said point extremity of the valve is adapted to bear against the piston adjoining the lower end of the eductionpipe.
Au eccentric 20 is mounted upon the auxiliary shaft and works within a strap 20, provided With a pitman 21, the outer end of which is pivotally connected with a crankarm 2l, secured to the shaft of the lever.
In order to maintain the valve in close contact with the cylinder and preventit from being moved outward by centrifugal force, I have provided the valve-chamber with an airinlet pipe 22, having a controlling-cock 23. In the operation of the device the rapid rotation of the piston causes a vacuum on the piston side of the valve or abutment. The controlling-cock in the air-inlet pipe being opened during the operation of the piston,the normal pressure of the atmosphere tends to force the valve or abutment into contact with the piston and will maintain it in contact until the action of the eccentric throws the valve out of contact therewith to permit the point extremities of the piston to pass said valve. By reason of the oval shape of the piston the eccentric will always keep the toe of the valve 17 in contact therewith, as during the rotation of the piston its diameter with respect to the valve constantly changes, and the valve following such changes, by reason of its movement by the eccentric will, be in contact with the piston during substantially the entire revolution. Y
The provision and construction of the several parts of the device and their peculiar relation with respect to each other is of the utmost importance to insure the best results inA a pump of thistype. By means of the con- IOC trolling-cock inV the air-educt-ion pipe of the valve-chamber the pressure of the air on the valve or abutment maybe regulated so as to cause the valve to bear vwith any desired degree of pressure against the piston.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-" l. In a rotary pump, the combination with the cylinder having an extension forming a valve-opening provided with an air-inlet and cock, and said cylinder provided with inlet and outlet passages, of the oval-shaped piston, the pivoted valve having a laterally-extending toe at the free end constructed to always have its toe in contact with said piston, the valve-shaft thereof, the crank-arm connected therewith, the eccentric-strap, the eccentric-rod connected therewith and with said crank-arm, the shaft upon which said eccentric is mounted and the gearing whereby said. eccentric makes two revolutions `to each revolution of the piston, substantially as described.
2. In rotary pumps or elevators, the combination of a cylinder provided with an induction-pipe and a Valve-chamber extension located on one side and near the upper side thereof, an eduction-pipe entering the said cylinder at the point of intersection of the cylinder proper and the valve-chamber extension thereof, a substantially oval-shaped piston mounted on a shaft having a bearing point extremities bearing against the cylin- L der-wall, a crank-wheelv on one end of said shaft and a gear-wheel on the other end thereof, an auxiliary shaft provided with a gear of relatively smaller size than the gear on the Y main shaft but meshing therewith, a valve or abutment mounted on a shaft in the valve- :cha'mber extension and provided, with a substantially oval-shaped outer end, the foot or `toe extremity of which,is adapted to bear in the head of the cylinder and having its
