APPARATUS FOR "EXEIGISING:i THE TYMPANUM.
- (Application filed Feb. 6, 1899.)
UNITED STATES PATENT il union..
APPARATUS FOR EXERCISING THE TYMPANUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,790, dated J une27, 1899. Application led February 6, 1899. Serial. No. 704,621. (No-model.)
By raising the cap r a certain amount of To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WIGMORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia, State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Exercising the Tympanum, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in 1o apparatus for exercising the tympanum or ear-drum; and it consists of an air-pump,
1 means, preferably a water-motor, for operating said pump, a valve for controlling the pressure and suction of the pump, and a tube t 5 for connecting the pump with the ear of the patient.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciication,`Figure l is a perspective view, partlybroken away, of myimzo proved apparatus; and Fig. 2, a central secz 5 for the discharge of the water; e, a shaft upon which wheel a is carried and whichis carried in bearings in case b; f, a pulley or fly-wheel on shaft c; g, a handle by means of which this shaft may be turned by hand; h, a crank 3o upon shaft c, to which is attached one end of a piston-rod t', which is attached to a piston j, working in a cylinder lo; Z, a iiexible pipe leading from cylinder 7c to the ear of the patient and equipped with a tip 'm to beinserted in the. ear; n, avalve between pipe Z and the pump-cylinder k.
. In the valve n is a disk o.-say of rubberplaced loosely in the stem p.
r is a cap furnished with slots s on its sides,
4o which is adapted to be placed overstem p and to be moved up and down on this stem to open or close the valve, as may be desired.
The shaft e being revolved, the piston j is reciprocated in cylinder k. On the downward stroke the air in the piston is driven into the ear through' tube Z. On the upward stroke the air is sucked back into the cylinder, and the ear-drum is thereby moved in and out.
air, depending upon the distance thatthe cap is raised, compressed on the downward stroke of the piston will escape through valve n in stead of passing to the ear; but the suction of the pump on the upstroke of the piston, the valve automatically closing on this stroke, remaining substantially the same the drum will beV drawn out l more than it has been pushed in. By adjusting. the valve varying degrees of pressure'may be given to the ear.
The shafty c is preferably revolved by the water-wheel; but it may be driven by a belt on iiy-wheel or pulley f, or this wheel f may be rotated by means of the handle g.l
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. In an rapparatus for exercising the tympanum, in combination, a pump operating upon one stroke to force air into and upon the other to exhaust it from the ear, a tube leading from said pump, a tip carried by said tube adapted to be inserted in the ear, and an adjustable relief-valve between the pump and the tip adapted to open to regulate the pressure of air in said tube on` the'compression stroke of said pump and to close upon its suction stroke.
2. In an apparatus for exercising the tympanum, in combination, a pump operating upon one stroke to force air into and upon the other to exhaust it from the ear, a tube leading from said pump, a tip carried by said tube adapted to be inserted in the ear, an adjustable relief-valve between the pump and the tip adapted to open to regulate the pressure of air in saidtube upon the'compression stroke of said pump and to close upon the suction stroke, a case having a water inlet and outlet, a water-wheel within said case, a crank upon the shaft of said wheel, and a rod connecting said crank and the piston of said pump.
