TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN DAYISON, of Plymouth, in the county of Wayne, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Ohurns; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon. V I
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specifichtion, A represents an ordinary barrel or cylinder churn, which is provided with a cover, C. This cover is provided with a hole or opening to receive the dasherstafi. D, and this hole or opening is provided with a slot, e, to receive the tube a of the clasher-stafi. D represents the dasher-staff, which is provided with a long spiral tube, a, which runs in the groove 0, and which serves to give the staff D a rotary motion independent of its reciprocating motion, and allows air to pass into the churn. Upon the lower end of the stafl' D is secured the dasher J J, which is made double, the upper one, J, being composed of 'two strips, which are placed at right angles to each other, and perforated or notched as may be desirable, and secured .to the lower end of the staif. The dasher, or part of the dasher, J, is constructed similarly to the part J, but is placed a little below it, being connected to it by means of the rods 2' 2'. The shaft 1) is given a reciprocating motion by means of a lever-handle, F, to which it is connected at its upper end. The lever F has its fulcrum in or upon a support, G, which is attached at its lower end to the churn body, and passes through, and is kept in place by means of a projecting ar1n, 'H. That end of the lever F to which the staff Dis attached is provided with a slot,an(l in this slot is pivoted a swivel-block through which the upper end of the statl' passes, and in which it is secured. The stafi' D is given a reciprocating or. vertical motion, and at the same time a rotary motion, by means of the lever F. The upper end of the stail revolves in the swivel-block as it.(the staff) is caused to revolve by the thread a working in the slot e of the opening in the churn cover.
Having thns fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The arrangement of the stafi' D, provided with its tube a and dashers, with the churn body and the lever F, provided with its swivel-block, for the purpose of churning milk or cream, substantially as herein specified. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of April, 1867.
JONATHAN DAVISON.
