SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662.132, dated November 20, 1900.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, THERON R. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inner Tubes for Pneumatic Tires; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clean-,and exact description of the lllVGl'lblOll,SUOll as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My improvement relates to the construction of inner orair tubes for pneumatic tires; and it consists, substantially, in the improved method of closing the ends of the tube by the use of double flaps, one of which is narrower than the other, out from the body of the tube and folded back upon it and cemented or vulcanized thereto, and has for its object the forming of a closure for the end of the tube, which is strong and not liable to give 2, way from overpressure, as is frequently the case with the ordinary single or envelop flap closure now in use.
The features of this invention are herein:
after fully set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 show convenient forms of flaps cut in the end of tube ready tobe folded down and cemented or vulcanized. Fig. 3 shows a side view in elevation of the ends of the tube when closed and inflated. Fig. 4 shows a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 5 shows a vertical longitudinal section of one of the closed ends of the tube.
In the drawings thus illustrating my invention, A is a section of an inner tube for a pneumatic tire, consisting of a light flexible tube of thin rubber closed at the ends, so as to retain air, and adapted to be placed inside of the nonexpansible sheath which forms the body of the tire. In closing the ends of this tube it is necessary to make it so that it will be perfectly air-tight and at the same time stand considerable strain. To accomplish this result, I cut flaps B and O by slit.- ting the ends of the tube substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the flap B will be approximately one-half of the width of the flap 0. The edges of the sides of the flap O are then folded down upon and cemented to the flap 0 down to or slightly below the lower ends of the slits in the tube. Then the outer surface of the flap B is coated with cement and folded back into the interior of the tube down to the dotted line at and cemented to the opposite inner wall thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 5. The inner surface of the flap 0 and the folded edges thereof are then coated with cement and folded over the bend in the flap B and cemented to the outer surface of the opposite wall of the tube, as illustrated in Fig. 5. In this manner I am enabled to form a closure for the end of the tube, which is of great strength and permanence and not liable to give way or break, thereby greatly reducing the number of imperfect and leaky closures now encountered in the construction of these tubes.
Having thus described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
An inner tube for pneumatic tires slit at its end so as to form two opposing flaps, one of which is substantially half the width of the other and doubled into the interior of the tube and cemented to the inner surface of the opposing wall, and the edges of the sides of the other and wider flap being folded down upon and cemented to itself, this flap being doubled over the bend of the narrow flap and cemented upon the outer surface of its opposing wall substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
