COMBINED BUTTON AND SUPP-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661.916, dated November 13, 1900.
' Application filed April 19, 1900 the cuff together and one which is adapted to engage with the coat-sleeve to prevent its dis-y arrangement therewith.
To this end my invention consists of a socketed plate adapted to be secured to the inside of a coat-sleeve, a detachable butt-on to engage the shirt-Wristband, and a doubleheaded connecting pin or shank designed to engage the plate and button, whereby the several parts are connected together.
Further details of construction and combinations of parts forming a part of this invention will be fully described, hereinafter defined in the appended claims,and illustrated l in the accompanying drawings, all forminga part of the specification relating to this invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional View through a portion of a sleeve, showing the application of the device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the invention all the parts of which are assembled; and Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the several elements disconnected.
Referring now to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates a portion of a coat-sleeve, to which is adapted to be sewed or otherwise secured a socketed retainingf plate 2. This plate comprises a disk 3, prefera-bly circular in plan'and provided with a concentric opening 4, surrounded by two outwardly projecting oppositely disposed and resilient semicircular retaining-anges 5 and 6 to form a socket for the reception of a head on the end of the pin to be hereinafter referred to, and each flange is provided with right-angular engaging lips 7 and 3, the purpose of which will be presently apparent. A plurality of perforations 3nare provided in serial No. 13,540. NO modelli the disk, whereby it may be secured to the garment.
The button, which is fastened to the wristband 9 and the cuff 10, comprises a disk l1, concentric with which and integral therewith is an elongated tapering split socketed post 12, also provided with lips 13 and 14 'to engage the elongated shank or head 15 of the connecting-pin 16, to be fully described in thev following paragraph.
The third member or connecting-pin 16 comprises a tapering shank 15 to fit in the tapering socket A12 of the button andA is provided with an annular groove 17, designed to be engaged by the lips 13 and 14 to retain the button and shank in operative engagement. Connected to one end of the shank 15 is a ball-shaped head 18, forming an annular groove 19 at its juncture therewith to be engaged by the lips 7 and 8 of the plate 2 when said head is forced between the resilient flanges of the plate. In order that the sockets of the plate and button will not ride too far uponthe respective ends of the connectingpin, I provide an intermediate stop or annular disk 20, integral with said pin and between the grooves thereof, whereby the movement of the plate and button will be limited.
The mode of operation is as follows: Supposingall the parts to be disconnected and the plate 2 to be sewed at the proper point on the inside of the lower end of the sleeve, the operator lirst inserts the socketed post of the button through the buttonholes of the Wristband of the shirt. The shank 15 of the connecting-pin is then inserted through the upper buttonholes of the cu and snapped Within the socketed post, so that the lips 13 and 14 will engage with the groove on said shank. Thiswill secure the cuffs and the shirt together, the intermediate fiange 20 acting as a head to the button to prevent the displacement of the cuff. The shirt-sleeves may then be elevated to withdraw or retract the cuffs within the coat-sleeves to protect said cuifs against becoming soiled should the weather be inclement; but when it is desired to display the cuffs the head 18 can be forced between the resilient arms of the plate 2, allowing the lips 7 aud 8 to engage the groove 19, and the cuif will be made fast to the inte- IOO rior of the coatfslleeve, and thus allow a suflieient portion of` the. cuff to protrude below the edges of the coat-sleeves to give a neat and dressy appearance to the wearer.
It will thus be seen that by using my def vice Icombine a shirt-button with acuff-rerainer in a simple, cheap, and efficient form, and While I have described in detail what appears to be the very brestV means of accomplishing the desired 4result I reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as would properly coxnew-ithin. the scope of my invention Without departing from the spirit thereof. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desire to. secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A combined cuff-holder and button comprising` twoV separate and independentsocketed memibers,andfaconnectingpin providedy with an` intermediate flange against whic-hthe ends of the sockets of the` respective members areadapted to abut when all the-parts;
are connected.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a disk having two outwardly-disposed semicircular flanges, of' a button provided with a split post to form-a socket, a connecting-pin to removably and independently engage both the disk and button and comprising a shank, a ball-shaped Ahead on one end thereof and an annular flange at the juncture of the head with the shank.
3. The combination With two socketed members, each having inwardly-bent engaging I,lips at the ends of the sockets, of aseparable and independent connecting-pin comprising a shank having a groove for engagement with the lips on one member, and a ball-shaped head on one end of the shank and provided With a groove for engagement with the lips on the other member.
In testimony whereof I'affix'my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HORATIO NELSON LIPHARD.
