UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

FOLDING SEAT-FASTENER.
srEcIEIcATIoN forming part of Lea-.ers YParent No. 661,845. dated November 13, 1900.
Application led August 2, 1900. Serial NO- 251708- (NO modem To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, LEWIS O.' BRYE, LU- oAs GRIMsRUD, and ALBERT THRUNE, citizens of the United States, residing at Coon Valley, in the county of Vernon and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Folding Seat-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle-seat fasteners; and one object thereof is to provide a device of this character that is securely locked in operative position so that there is no chance of accidental displacement. A further object is to provide means for locking the device in inoperative position, so that it will not interfere with the ready removal of the seat when so desired.
In order that a complete understanding of the invention may be acquired, the invention is fully described in the following specification and shown in the drawings which accompany and form a part of the same, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the inner side of a vehicle body and seat, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a pian view of the same. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section on the line xx of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing the device in unlocked position.
Similarl numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in each of the figuresof the drawings.
The invention essentially comprises two plate members pivotally joined at their contiguous ends, one of said members being angled or approximately L-shaped, and a locking device associated with said members and providing means for locking the angular member in either of two positions.
In the drawings the numerals 10 and 11 designate the two plate members, one of which, 11, is provided with the angular extension 12, which is arranged to engage under the cleat or guide-strip 13 of the inner wall of the vehicle-body. This extension 12 is preferably strengthened by means of the exterior rib 14, which extends around the corner and is provided with a projecting finger-lug 15. The knuckle 16 of this plate member is provided with a pair of squared shoulders 17 17,
which are arranged in different planes at an angle to each other or arranged in substan tially opposite relation. These shoulders 17 171 are adapted to be engaged by one end of the locking-bolt 18, which is carried by the opposite plate member 10. The locking-bolt 1S is slidably-mounted upon the plate inember 10 preferably by providing this member with the integral casing 19, which is open at the back. The bolt is slidably mounted in this casing and projects through the open ends thereof, one end being adapted to engage behind either shoulder 17 17, the opposite end being bent to form a handle portion 20. The shank of the bolt is rounded, as at 21, and a coiled spring 21 is arranged upon the rounded portion, its ends engaging the shoulders 22 of the bolt and the inner wall of the casing, respectively. By this means the bolt is normally held in operative engagement with the knuckle 1G of the opposite plate member.
In using the device the plate member 10 is secured to the inner side of the seat, so that the member 11 will snugly engage under the cleat or guide-strip 13 of the vehicle-body. When in this position, the two members will be in alinement and the bolt will be engaged behind the shoulder 17, whereby the device is securely locked in its operative position and cannot become accidentally displaced. When it is desired to remove the seat, the bolt is retracted and the plate member 11 is thrown around until the bolt engages behind the other shoulder 17, whereby the member is held locked in inoperative position and will not interfere with the removal or replacement of the seat.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in-the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A vehicle-seat fastener comprising two members having a pivotal connection, one member carrying a projection, and a locking device carried by the other member and adapted to engage the opposite sides of said projection to provide for locking said fastener in an operative or inoperative position.
2. A vehicle-seat fastener comprisinga pair of hinged plates, one of which is provided with a knuckle having a plurality of radial shoulders, and a locking-bolt carried by the other plate and normally urged toward the knuckle for engagement With eitherv of the shoulders to lock one oi' the plates rigidly in its operative or inoperative position as desired, one of said plates being provided with an engaging device designed to engage a relatively-fixed part as for instance a cleat.
3. A Vehicle-seat fastener comprising a pai i' of hinged plates, one of which is provided zo In testimony that we claim the foregoing as l our own We have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses,
LEWIS O. BRYE. LUCAS GRIMSRUD. ALBERT THRUNE.
