WILLIAM R. VIIITEIIEAD, OF TREN'ION, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO TI-IE AMERICAN LAMP AND BRASS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LAlVl P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,332, dated November 6, 1900.
Application filed November 21,1899. Serial No. 737,748. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern: descent-light bulb or burner 13, as indicated Beit known that IJVILLIAM R/VHITEHEAD, in dotted lines, and the lower end of said tube a citizen of the United States, and a resident l0, which preferably extends to a point about of rlrenton, Mercer county, State of New Jerin line with the lower end of the flame- 55 sey, have inventeda certain new and useful spreader, as shown, is provided with an in- Improvement in Lamps, of which the followternal screw-thread 14 to provide for the deing is a specification, reference being had to tachable connection therewith of a coupling the accompanying drawings, forming part l5 on the end of a gas-tube 1G. The opposite thereof. ends of the tube may, however, in lieu of 6o ro My invention relates to anilnprovementin being provided with serewthreads for the central-draft oil-lamps, and has for its object connection therewith of theparts as described to provide a simple and inexpensive means be constructed in any other suitable manner whereby such lamps may be adapted for the to provide forthe detachableconnection thereuse of either gas or electricity. with of the burners and gas-tube without 65 I5 W'ith this end in view my invention condeparture from my invention.
sists in the construction and arrangement of In adapting the lamp for the use of gas the parts, as hereinafter set forth in detail and Haine-spreader is first removed from the uppointed out in the claims. per end of the draft-tube 5, and the flexible Referring to the drawings, Figure l isacengas-tube 16, which connects with the regular 7o 2o tral vertical section through a lamp embodygas xture in the room or other suitable ing my invention, also showing in connection source of supply, is then passed under the therewith a gas-burner and gassupply tube base of the lamp and up through the central in full lines and an incaudescentlight bulb draft-tube 5 to have its coupling 15 screwed in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged top intoconnection with thelower end ofthe tube 75 view of the flame-spreader detached from the l0. After such connection has been made lamp. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section between the gas-tube 16 and the tube lO the through such dame-spreader. Fig. 4 is a botflamespreader is then again seated in the uptom View of the same, and Fig. 5 is a detail per end of the central draft-tube 5, after view illustrating a modified form of my inwhich the burner may be placed in connection 8o 3o vention. therewith. By means of such described con- 'Io explain in detail, the bowl or body l of struction and arrangement of part-s the lamp the lamp, the oil-fount chamber 2, having may be readily adapted for the use of gas in opeuings in its lower wall, and the oil-fount avfew moments time and without requiring 4, having the central draft-tube 5, are of usual the change or substitution of any of its parts. 85 construction and arrangement, as found in In other words, the lamp might, if so desired, the ordinary central-draft oil-lamp. Removbe used forboth oil and gas or electricity at ably seated in the upper end of the central the same time. draft-tube 5 is the usual flame-spreader 6, In adapting the lamp for the use of elecwhich latter consists of the perforated tubutricity the current-wire is passed beneath the 9o 4o lar piece 7, adapted to fit within the upper base of the lamp and up through the draft'- end of the draft-tube 5, and having a top or tube 5 and the spreader-tube l0 to the bulb cap piece 9 closing its upper end. Accordor burner 13, which latter is connected with ing to my invention I provide this flamethe projecting end 1l of said tube l0. spreader device with a short vertically-ar- Referring to Fig. 5, I have illustrated a 95 ranged tube l0,which passes centrallythrough modified form of my invention. In this inits top or cap piece 9 and is brazed or otherstance I have provided a cast disk 18, which wise secured in fixed connection therewith. is adapted to removably fit within the upper The upper projecting end l1 of this tube l0 end of the central draft-tube 5 in lieu of the is screw-threaded for the detachable connecregular flame-spreader and is provided with roo 5o tion therewith of either a gas-burner l2, as a threaded nipple 19 011 its upper side for the indicated in full lines in Fig. l, or an incanconnection therewith of a gas-burner or an Iincandescent-light burner and with a female or internal screw-thread 2O at the lower end of its opening 2l for the connection therewith of the supply-tube, this disk, constructed as described, being adapted to be manipulated for the connection therewith of the burners and supply-tube or the passage therethrough of the electric wire in the same manner as before described relative to the dame-spreader.
Although I have shown an ordinary gasburner in connection with myimproved lamp, it Will of course be understood that any forni of burner may be used in connection with the same, a Welsbach burner being particularly applicable.
Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat.- ent, is 1 l. In a central-draft lamp, the combination, with the central draft-tube, of a device for removable connection with the upper end of said draft-tube, having an opening extending therethrough and provided with means at its upper end for the detachable connection therewith of a burner, for the purpose set forth.
2. In acentral-draftlam p, the combination, with the central drafttuhe,of a flamespreader, removably connected with the upper end of said tube, provided with a tube connected therewith and extending through its top or cap piece, the upper projecting end of said tube being adapted for the detachable connection therewith of a burner.
3. In a central-draft lamp, the combination,
with the central draft tube, of a flamespreader, removably connected with the upper end of the tube, provided with a vertically-arranged tube extending through its top or cap piece and being rigidly connected therewith, the opposite ends of said tube being adapted for the detachable connection therewith of a burner and gas-tube respectively. 4E. A flame-spreader for central-draft oillamps, provided with a tube connected therewith and extending through one wall thereof, the exterior projecting end of said tube being adapted for the detachable connection therewith of a burner.
5. A dame-spreader for central-draft oillamps, provided with an opening extending therethrough and having means adjacent to the upper end of said opening for the connection therewith of a burner, for the purpose set forth.
G. A centraldraft oil-lamp provided with a central draft-tube having a cap or device adjacent toits upper end which is provided with an opening extending therethrough and with means adjacent to the upper end of said opening for the connection therewith of a burner, for the purpose set forth.
