As in my aforesaid application, I tightly close the upper end of the wick tube 2%) by means of a cap 31 and I form the outlet 32. This outlet opens into a surrounding jet ring 33 having perforations or jets 3+ in its top. the said jets forming the apor outlets of the lamp. The jet ring as in my aforesaid application is of a size to fit and substantially fill the shutter 9. Above the jet ring the wick tube is substantially hexagonal in horizontal section, but with slightly depressed side faces 35), the angles of the several t'aces being extended far enough to substantially fill the shutter. that is, far enough to reach nearly to the inner wall of the shutter. The jets 3% correspond in number to the several side faces of the angular portion of the wick tube above the jet ring, and are located at about the middle of the said faces as shown in Fig. 1. Below the ring, the wick tube is enlarged so as to form an internal annular chamber that extends downwardly a short distance, below which chamber the wick tube is of substantially the same diameter as it is within the jet ring. Instead of the loose rod shown in my afor said application, I encircle or partially encircle the wicking 36 with wire gauze 37, the
same extending over that portion of the wicking that lies within the annular chamber 35, and up through the jet ring whereby the wicking is prevented from expanding to fill the annular chamber and also is held out of contact with the inside of the wick tube above and for a short distance below the said chamber so as to hold the wickiug away from the wick tube from end to end of the said gauze.
If desired the meeting or confronting edges 38 of the wire cloth 37 may be turned in as shown. No fastening of the wire cloth or gauze, is necessary as it will stay in place by merely winding it about the wicking.
The shutter may be turned down far enough to bring its upper end nearly to the level of the top of the jet ring. \Yhen the lamp has stood idle for a time. the wicking becomes saturated and must be partially dried out before the lamp can be burned to the best advantage. I pon heating up the Wick tube. the surplus liquid in the wicking above the jet ring will be forced downwardly. The Wire gauze above the jet ring separates the wicking from the wick tube so that the liquid can thus flow down below the jet ring, while the annular chamber 35 forms a receptacle into which the liquid can flow and be taken up again by the wickmg in due time. 1
This prevents the liquid from being forced out of the jets of the jet ring, notwithstanding the fact that these ets are quite a distance below the upper closed end ol' the wick tube. After the surplus liquid has thus been driven down and gas or vapor is generated within the upper part of the wick tube the said 'apor can freely pass downwardly to the jet ring and burn at. the jets. The shutter may be raised so far as to bring its upper end against the cap 31 for extinguishing the flame. l t may also be stopped with its upper end intermediate its two extreme positions. By having the jet ring outside oi the wick tube and the shutter outside of the jet ring, the shutter is necessarily of a larger diameter than the wick tube. By making a portion of the wick tube above the jet ring of an angular form l am enabled to bring the angles thereot closely to the side oi the shutter so that when the shutter is partly elevated the several jets of the jet ring are separated t rom each other and the vapor may passup between the outside oi the wick tube and inside of the shutter and burn only at the upper end of the shutter. \Yerc it not for these angles on the wick tube the llame would extend con tinuously upward from the jets.
I claim as my invention 1. In a vapor lamp, the combination of a font having a boss with a wick tube fitted in the said font and having an annular enlargement at a point within the tout below the top of the said boss. a surrounding jet ring above the said enlargement and adjacent to the said boss, a wicking tor the said wick tube and a sheet of metallic gauze surrounding a portion of the said wicking within the wick tube and extending longitudinally from a point near the lower end of the said enlargement upwardly above the top of the said ring.
2. ln a vapor lamp, the combination of a. font having a top with a wick tube mounted in the said font and having an annular enlargement extending longitudinally above and below the plane of the said top, and a \vicking supported in position by the said wick tube at points above and below the said enlargement, the said wicking and tube having between them an annular space within the said enlargement.
3. In a vapor lamp, the combination of a wicking with a wick tube having an annular enlargement and a sheet of wire gauze interposed bctwcen the wicking and the confront ing face of the said wick tube, the said sheet extending longitudinally of the wick tube over the said enlargement and supported at its opposite ends by the inner wall and the smaller diameter of the wick tube at each end of the said enlargement.
