Description

B. Hi J ENKS. SPINDLE BEARING.
No. 66,091. A Patented June 25, 1,867. l
@anni gums germ @frire BARTON H. JENKs or BRIDESBURG, PENNSYLVANIA. Lettera Patent No. 66,091, dated June 25, 1867i Inrnovsusnr IN SPINDLE-remises.
. filly: l ..zlgch'nl'e rentrer in in time Erima atmt nur making part nf its same.
To ALL wson 1T MAY conocen:
Be it known that 1".,'BAR'ION H. JENKS, of Brideshurg, `in the county of Philsdelphia, and State of Pennsylvunia, h nveinvcnted n new and improved SelfAdjusting Support for the Spindles of Spinning Machinery; and Ihereby declare tlint the followiugis n full, clear, and'exact description thereof, reference boing had to the accoinpunying drawings, making pnrt of this specicntion, in whi'eh-` Figure 1 is a. vertical section of a. self-adjusting bolster, having a. spindle through it. l
This invention relates to n'ncw and useful improvement in supporting the spindles of spindle-framcs, speeders, twisters, and: other like machinery requiring spindles to run ut a. ver:`v high rute of speed; the object of which improvement is to eiectunlly prevent spindles from binding` or working hnrd in their bearings in consequence of the expansion und eontrnction of their supporting frames, or the settling of' the floors of factories,
or from other circumstances` which aect the positions of the bearings of spindles after they have been adjusted to run true.
The n'eturc of my invention consists in the manner shown of constructing and fitting the spherical part of 'the spindle-bolster to the spindle-rsiL-whereby weakening of the ruil to as grentan extent ns heretofore is avoided,
und whereby, also, a. lighter rail possessing suilcient strength may be adopted; and whereby, also, increased simplicity is attained and greet convenience for manipulating the bolstersand spindles aorded.
A To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I .will describe the same more minutely with reference to the drawings.
Inthe accompanying drawings, iig. 1, hnve represented a vbolster which is adapted for sustaining und guiding a. spindle, A, at a point above its step-bearing, and which will adjust-itself to any changes or untrueness of the frame of the machine. This bolster is of a. spherical form, with tubular estensione formed on it for extending or increasing its length. The spherical enlargement a, with its extensions lb b, is drilled out so as to form a passage for the spindle A, and if founddesirnble the bore of this bolster may herecessed und provided wit-h cloth for supplying oil to the spindle and preventing the escape of oil below the lower end of the bolster. The upper tubular extension b may be constructed with an oil-supplycup of any o' the well-,kneten or most improved forms, forsupplying oil to the bolster and its spindle. The sphericnlportion a of the bolster, or what I shall term the bull of the bolster, lis neatly itted'into a, half socket, e,'whieh is made in the upper surface of the supporting rnil B, and this bell is heldV down' in place by means of e ccp, d, which Vis suitably secured to the rail B`so lthstit can be removed from the latter et pleasure'. To prevent the bolster from rotating with its spindle A, a. small stud, e, projects from it and enters o recess formed in the cap and ruil, as shown in iig. 1. This recess will allow a. rocking movement of the holster, but4 prevent it from being turned about its axis. The tubular extensions b poss through holes c s, which are mode through the cap and rail of sufficient diameter to allow n freo ball-end-socket movement of the bolster. i
It will be seen that I intake a true semi-spherical sent in the upper part of the ruil, land that Iuse n cap, which also is n true semi-sphere, the toprof the n-il und 'the bese of the cap being the central division ofthe hollow sphere formed by the sent in the rail und the sent in the csp. Thus I uvoid the diicnltics above referred to, -which diiiiculties are .in a great measure experienced with the spindle-holsters of John C. Whittin, patented June 7, 1864, and of Fethney, patented in England in 1,4861, and numbered 2,177.
WhutI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LettersPutent, is
The combination of the bolster-ccp and rail, arranged' as shownnud described, end constructed and operating as set forth.-
BARTON H. JEN KS.
