SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,850, dated October 30, 1900.

T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. ESTELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Seals, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to that type of carlseals -which comprise a light metal strap adapted to be passed through the fastening of a car-door and to have its ends joined in such manner that they cannot be separated for the purpose of permitting the disengagement of the door-fastening Without mutilation.
The objects of the invention are to simplify and cheapen the construction and to obtain perfect security. j
The invention consists in the arrangement of parts hereinafter fully describe d,and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the head of the seal. outer cap being removed and the tongue-piece being out of engagement with the case. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
The seal is preferably formed of a simple sheet-,metal strap A, one end of which is provided with lateral iianges B. A tongue-piece C projects from the same end and is adapted to be overturned upon the body portion, so as to form a hinge-socket for the wire detent D. This detent is made of spring-wire and is folded U shape. Preferably the two arms of the U are bent inwardly intermediate of their ends and at their extreme ends are bent laterally, as shown at d, so as to project perpendicularly from the plane of the U.
A cap-piece E, of sheet metal and of approximately the same length as the flanges B,
is superimposed upon the ange portion of the strap, and its edges are turned downwardly The flanges B B are then overturned and pressed down upon the feet e e, thereby securingv the cap-piece E in place. The rearward end of the chambervof the head thus formed is closed by a projecting end F of the cap E, which is Fig. 2 is a plan section of the same, the` detent, so as to pass between them, these ends falling behind the barbs of thevarrowhead, thereby effectually preventing the Withdrawal of the strap end from the head of the seal. The depth of the chamber of the sealvhead is substantially equal to the thickness of the strap and ofA the wire forming the detent D, so that when the arrow-head end of the strap is inserted within this chamber it so completely iills its open end that it is impossible to insert thereinto a bolt for the purpose of spreading the detent ends e e in order to release the. seal, and `hence the seal cannot be separated except by being destroyed.
The transverse recess formed in the cap at G for the accommodation of the 'ends d of the detent is so located that its front wall forms a-bearing for such ends when withdrawing strain is applied to the strap, thereby preventing the wire from being distorted.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a car-seal, the combination with a strap having a chambered head at one end, the outer end of such head being open, the farther end of the strap being pointed and barbed, of a spring-wire detent in substantially U form and secured by its cross member within the chamber of the head, both of its arms being free, the ends of'such detent being substantially perpendicular to the face of the strap, whereby the barbed end of the strap may enter between such ends and engage With both of its barbs.
