(ModeL) v M. O. HARNEY.
SEAL LOOK.
No. 351,030. Patented Oct. 19, 1886.

. MICHAEL C. HARNEY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO \VILLIAM N. BRENNAN AND ANN BRENNAN, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
SEAL-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,030, dated October 19, 1886.
Application filed January 25, 1886. Serial No. 189,694. Modcl.)
T to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, llIIOHAEL O. HARNEY, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin SealLocks, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved seallock. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lower end of the bolt with the seal removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the seal in place on the bolt. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the [5 seal'lock, showing part of the end of the bolt,
the section being taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 5.
Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on line 5 5,
Fig. 4.
My invention relates to an improved sealloek, intended more particularly for railwaycars; and my invention consists in features of novelty, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents part of the car-body, and B part of the cardoor, the former being provided with a staple, D, as usual, and the latter with a hasp, E, as usual.
F represents a locking-bolt, connected to the carbody by a chain, G, and adapted to fit through the staple, as shown. The lower end of the bolt has an extension, H, provided with an inclined tongue or projection, I, between the inner end of which and the end of the bolt is a space, J. The end of this extension H is reduced, as shown, forming ashoulder, L, beyond which is an extension or lip, M.
N represents the seal, which consists of a sleeve or thimble, having a loop, 0, secured to the outer end, which is preferably made of wire. The inner end of the sleeve is opened,
so that it (the sleeve) can be slipped over the end of the bolt, as shown, and the outer end is closed, with the exception of a small open- 5 ing, P, to receive the extension or lip M of the bolt.
In applying the seal it is slipped over the end of the bolt, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4., and
5, the loop 0 slipping upward and over the inclined projection I. When the seal has been forced entirely onto the bolt, the spring-loop 0, having passed the inner end of the eXtension I, springs down into a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 5, and thus being engaged over the end of the projection, the seal 5 cannot be removed without destroying it. The seal has a projection or protuberance, Q, to prevent the bolt from being withdrawn from the staple until the seal is removed therefrom. The lip or extension M, fitting in the 6 opening P of the end of the seal, prevents the seal from being turned on the bolt, and thereby avoids a.l possibility of the loop being disengaged from the projection I by turning the seal. The seal may have a tablet, T, as shown 6 in Fig. 1, upon which may be marked the station to which the car is to be sent.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a bolt provided with a locking projection and a seal consisting of a sleeve provided with a loop to engage over the projection on the bolt, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bolt having a reduced end and lip, in combination with a seal consisting of a sleeve provided with a loop and an opening to receive the lip on the bolt, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of a bolt having a re duced end, inclined projection on the reduced end of the bolt, sleeve havinga protuberance,
Q, and spring-loop secured to the outer end of the seal, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the bolt having a reduced end, provided with a lip, M, inclined projection on the reduced end, and seal consisting of a sleeve having a protuberance, Q, and closed end provided with an opening, P, and a springdoop secured to the end, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I MICHAEL C. HARNEY.
