To It 'z'uhom it may cancer-my I Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS O. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Salve-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object is in a simple, effective, and inexpensive manner to prevent the grease or other substance contained in a salve-box or other receptacle for holding unguents, medicaments, &c., from discoloring the label on which is displayed the name of the goods contained in such box and at the same time to shield said label from damage, as from moisture, stains, or the like.

The invention consists, generally stated, in providing a grease-impervious wall between the substance contained in the box or other receptacle and the label, and, further, in providing an efficient form of label-holder, the same to be readily attached to or detached from the cover of the box or receptacle proper and affording asecu re and at once ornamental means for retaining the label in position on said cap or cover.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in sectional elevation of a salve-box embodying my invention, the parts of the cover or lid being separated clearly to show their relation to each other. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, exhibiting the parts of the cover or lid assembled, a part of one side of the cover being broken away. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective, exhibiting the invention as applied to a box or holder of different shape from that shown in the preceding figures. Fig. 4 is a view in elevation, exhibiting the neck of a bottle with my improvements applied thereto.

Referring to the drawings and to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, A designates the body of a salve or other box, the same to be made of any preferred or suitable material and provided with a screw-threaded neck Ct, to be engaged by a threaded cover or cap B, of metal or of a vitreous substance, a packing-disk a being provided, as usual, to fit within the cover to effect a tight juncture with the mouth of the neck when the cap is screwed down. Up to this point the box and its cover areof the same construction as those in ordinary use.

My invention resides in combining with the cover a detachable holder 0, preferably of metal, and provided with a downturned rim 0 to fit tightly on the top of the cover, as shown in Fig. 2, the center of the holder being cut or stamped out to leave a circular or other shaped opening 0 through which the inscription on the label 0 may be read. A disk 0 of transparent material, such as celluloid, is superposed on the label and held in place by a circumferential inturned flange or shoulder 0 formed by removing the center of the holder. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the holder 0 is held in place on the cover by frictional contact between the rim 0 and the cover; but it is to be understood that a threaded connection between these parts may, if desired, be employed, and as this construction will be obvious illustration is deemed unnecessary.

In Fig. 3 the cover, which will be constructed in the same manner as that exhibited in Figs. 1 and 2, is shown as applied to a box or receptacle which may be wholly of metal, the box and cover being struck up or stamped to the desired shape,whereas in the embodiment of my invention as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the box may be of a vitreous substance.

In Fig. 4 I have exhibited my invention as applied to a bottle, the top of the stopper D to carry the label-holder and its parts. In all of these embodiments of my invention it is to be understood that the top of the cover is to be solid, so that a grease-impervious wall will be interposed between the contents of the box or receptacle and the label.

In assembling the label-holder with .the cover the label 0 is placed on the solid top of the cover, the disk 0 of transparent material is then placed over the label, and the holder 0 is then firmly fitted on the cover. It will be seen that the label is shielded from injury at its back by the top of the cover and at its front by the transparent disk, through which the inscription on the label may be read.

It is to be understood that by reason of the manner of assembling the cover and the labelholder and adjunctive parts the same box and cover, with my attachment, may be used repeatedly for containing difierent substances, it being only necessary to change the label as required. 1

If desired, the cover may be provided with lugs or teats on opposite sides, to be engaged by bayonet-slots or depressions formed on the inner surface of the rim 0.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination with a solid-topped cover having means for attachment to a box or other receptacle, of a label-holder, having means to engage the cover, and a flange to hold the label and other applied adjuncts on the cover.

2. The combination with a solid-topped cover having means for attachment to a bofc or other receptacle, of a label-holder having a rim to engage the cover and by frictional contact therewith to be held in place on the cover, and a flange to hold the label and other applied adjuncts on the cover.

3, A cover for a salve-box comprising a sdlid-topped cap, having means for attachment to a box or other receptacle, a label, a disk of transparent material covering the label, and a label-holder having a rim to engage the outer walls of the top of the cap, and 3. flange t0 hOld. the label and disk in place.
