TO ALL WHOM IT'MAYCONCERN: Y A
Be it known that I, E. H. Asnclwlrtn'of the. city of Lynn. county Vof Essex,l in the State of Massachusetts, have invented n new and improved Water-Gauge for Steam Boilers; and I f lo hereby dechire that the fol lowing is a. full and 'exact description thereo'rcference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, Ialging a. part of this specification, in which like parts arcindicated by like letters in thesjevernl figures.
The nature of my invention consists in a. device for showing the height of wzrtei in steam boilers. To enable others sklledin the artv to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. .In'the'ditwings i i A Figure 1 shows an elevhtion of my -water-guge. Figure 2, a central anduvertica-Is'e'ction Vthrou'll'the seine.- 4 i v a and b arevanges by which mygauge is attached to4 n `steam boiler, say by screws, or` in any other suit-able mechanical 'w-ay. A and B are inlets from a boiler, .the 'former for steam and the letter for water;
CV is a glass tube qsuitably-seeured`in hollow chninbers D and Eat each end. This glassV tube passes through smiling-boxes F and G which are ilnnfged,l and ,which flanges, servefor gmtmrcdse..` Betw-eerrfrtheserstuiingg boxes FandiG, and the hollow' chambers D and E, 4into which they screw, there isla. suitable packing to secure the ends of" the glasstub'e C. -I. is a screw-cap at t'h'e top )of chamber D, through which to put in and fake out .the glass tube C when the gouge is attached to a boiler. Below ohsfniber E is a `pet-cock, g, byvwhichto blow oli' any sediment or dirty water Vwhichvmay accumulate. in the chamber of the water-gauge. Between `-the glass l.tube and the boiler is aimetnl tube', II, in which works a screw-roll. lr, madeof two parte, suitably connected'` 'as seen. At the lower end of this rod is a valve, lclosing o riopening a seat in inlet B".- At the upper end is a, similzu` valve, j, closing or opening thcsteam inlet' A above valve' j. 'lherod htsa screw -on it working with, 'a corresponding one on the Vripper part' of metnl tube There is a packing :it thetop of thisl tube H, and a.
stuiiingibox, al, andthe rod 'k isoperatedby means of wheel or lever, K, at its'extreme end.
The operation is as follows :Thefdrawings show my gauge in its normal or closed condition before connee` tion with the boiler has been made, or, watci. end4 stenm let in. .To let inboth, turn theI wheel or levier K sov as` to raise the -rocl tliis of 'eourse-`rais'es the .valves i and j, letting the water into the tube C through inlet B and chain-ber Esselte-esteem through ther'inlet A-'and chamber D.4 Thus the height of the water in the'boiler is seen by the height bf the snlneiny thepglsss tube. nOncsoperetion secures this result, whilst commonl watergauges reqniegtwo'separnte ones. 4The -rod la, carrying the valves z' and j, mayv be operatedin 'any equivalent mechanical manner, dispensing with wheel or lever In case ofthe br'ahingof the gloss rodLfroln any cause whatev'ex'it is very-desirable the connection withthe boiler should' bevcutol as speedilyas possible,
especiallyin'lo'coniotive boilers; fnd by'mynxethod lI cut of both sten-m and 'water by one-operation, simply turni'ngthe valve-rodih.- The valves i andy' may be replaced by cocks, beth "to be operated n'r inoved at the i same time, by nyfsuitable inechnnical device, not nnecessary to describe; this without altering the natureoi` my invention, auch device being a merefequivdlent one.
Having thus described, my inrenton', what I clailnas new, and desire to secure by Letterslatent of the United States, is i The Combination cf the valve-rod k with the vnlves' and j, and with the inlets A anclB, and glass tube C,
constructed; arrangcd,'andoperating in the manner substantially as shown and described and for the'purpose set forth.
