` BREEoH-LOADING FmEAnM.
SPECIFICATION forming' ptn-t of Letters Patent-No. 660,437, dated ctober 23, 1900.
Application lad February 23. 1900. Serial En. 6,275. llo model.)
To all whom it may cnn-cern.-
o it known that I, FREDERICK HOCH- BRUNN, a citizen of the United States, and a. residentof the city of Xew York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Breech-Loading Firearm, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
One purpose of the invention is to provide a control]ing-ringl or cut-oit` for magazinerifles adapted to revolve around the beltand to be carried thereby, the ring being of such construction that it' may be quickly turned by the fingers to `such position that the cartridges in the magazine will not be acted upon when the extractor is brought into ection, thus enabling the nrm While the magazine is filled to be used as a single-loader or whereby the ring may be brought to such a position that it will act upon 'both the extractor and the cartridges inthe magazine', enabling the gun to be'used as a simple repeater.
A further purpose of the invention is to so construct the ring with relation to the bolt and the extractor that thc ring will be carried to such at 'position thatitwill be ont of engagement with the extractor and also the cartridges in the magazine, enabling thc bolt to be withdrawn and the magazine replenished without withdrawing a cartridge that may be in the barrel.
The invention consists in the novel construct-ion andcombination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and point-ed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parte in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a. horizontal section through the breech portion of the barrel of a firearm,
the bolt having been carried rearward to expose the magazine and the ring` being in such a position that it will not causo a withdrawal of the cartridges from the barrel. Fig. :2 is a plan view of the breech portion of the firearm, the ring being in-such position that the arm may be used as arepeatez'. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the breech portion of thel arm, illustrating the position of the ring when the extractor and cartridges are not to4 be engaged. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line l 4 of Fig. 2, illustrating the manner in which the ring engages with the cartridges and the extractor. -Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the breech portici of t-he firearm, showing the ring lor cnt-off in the position it occupies when the firearm is to be used as a single-loader. Fig. 6 is n perspective view of Vthe ring. Fig. 7 is asectional view of the head ofthe bolt, illust-rating the controlling-ring or cnt-'off in position thereon. Fig. 8 is n vertical section through the breech port-ion of a firearm, taken practically on the lino S 8 ci Fig. l1, illustrating l the boit in the act of fnnzingn cartridge in the barrel. Fig. i! is a transverse section on the line 9 0 of Fig. 8.` Fig. -iU is a perspective 'view of the receiver or frame for the' bolt.
Fig. lli is a transverse section on the line i1 11 of Fig. 8, and Fig. l2 is a perspective view of the extractor.
(me of the objects of the invention is to provide controlling-ring or cut-of of suc'll construction that it dispenses with a separate gate for the magazine, while retaining the advantages of a gate, allowing the magazine to be replenished under any conditions, and permitting the gun to be operated as a. simple repeater with all the advantages of the Mauseror Lee systems or as :i single-shot ride with magazine held in reserve, as in the Krag- Jorgensen system witha gate.
A represents a portion-of the frame of a lirearm; B, the bolt.; B', the boit casing or receiver; C, the barrel, to which vthe boltcasing is attached; D, B cartridge in the breech of the barrel, and E represents the extractor provided with a recess l() in its inner face, as shown particularly in Fig. l.
F represents the improved controlling-ring or cutoif. This controlling-ring,r or cnt-olf F is shown in detail in Fig. 6, and its position on the head of the bolt is fully illustrated in Fig. 7.
The body 11 of the controlling-ring or cut-off F is circular, or it may be scmicircular, a'nd it maybe continuons and in ring-like forin, as shown in Fig. 6, or it. mary be in* the forni of a split ring, and the body n; provided with an otset 12 at one side adapted to enter. the slot; l0 in the extractor E, so tli: tt \vhen the controlling-ring or cut-off devtceis 1n position on the bolt and the odset-11 is 1n .en-
gageuieut with the extractor when the bolt is operated'the extractor will be also operated4 In the further construction of the body 11 of the controlling-ringer cut-off device a thumb 5, or finger piece 13 is formed exteriorly thereon adjacent to the offset 12, which is likewise exteriorly located, aud usually the construction of the controlling-ring or cut-off is completed by the addition of a tongue 14 to th'e body at a 'point diametrically opposite the thumb or linger piece 13.' This finger-piece extends forward from the bottoni portion of the rug, body,'as is shown in Figs. 6 and 7,
and is adapted to engage with the uppermost cartridge in `the magazine A' for the purpose of forcing said cartridge into the barrel after the empty shell has bee'n extracted and when the bolt is closed.
I desire it tobe understood that the' tongue 14 may be of any desired length, and I furthermore desire itto be understood that while the controlling-ring or cutoi`r is at all times loosely mounted on the bolt B it may be held iu placeA in any desired manner. Usually, 5 however, it is held in position by entering a recess 15 formed upon the exterior of the bolt B, as illustrated in Fig. 7.
When it is desired to leave a cartridge in the barrel and draw out the bolt for the purpose of charging the magazine, the controlling-ring is shifted to the position shown in Fig. 3, whereby the offset 12 is carried out from the slot or recess 10 in the extractorand engages with the left-hand side of the boltcasiug B', and the tongue 14 is carried to the right, occupyingl a position which will prevent lit from engaging with the cartridges in the'magazine. The bolt' may now he drawn out` uncovering the magazine, and the extractor will remain stationary..
lVhen the firearm is, to be used as a si m ple repeater, the offset 12 of the con'trolling-ringor cnt-olf is carried to the right until it partially enters thegroove or recess 10 in the extractor, and the tongue 14 occupies a central position below the bolt, as shown in Fig. 4. The bolt when drawn outward will now cause the extractor to operate upon the cartridge, andlwhen the bolt is carried to its closed position the uppermost cartridge in the magazine will be forced into the breech of the barrel. When the arm is to be used as a singleloader, the magazine being held in reserve, as shown in Fig. 5, the ring is carried as far as possible toward the right or until the olT- set 12 shall have fully entered ,the recess or grooYe 10 in the extractor, and in this position of the ring the tongue 14 will be at the left-handsdeof the magazine and will not engage withany of the cartridges in the magazine as the bolt is operated. A
The improved controlling-ring or cut-off rendersa firearm susceptible for uscite-asingle-loader with the magazine held in reserve and lsturthermore well adapted for such use when the magazine isempty. l-`urthermore, ttc cut-(" is easily operated whether the magazine be emptyor full, and the magazine illustrations, Figs. 8', 9, 10, l1, aud 12, which disclose various parts of an arm to which th'e improvement is 4especially adapted, but de not restrict myself to such particular cou- The extractor E is mounted struction. slide ine/channel 16 in the receiver B in the customary manner. The receiver B 1s con structed to accommodate the style of bolt employed, and one form of the 'receiver isshown in Fig. 10,-the estractor E, accompanying the receiver, being illustrated in Fig. 12. The cartridges I) are heldin the magazine A in such manner that the uppermost carinner face adapted to engage with the shellV of the uppermost cartridge D, and this block is suitably located in the receiver B', being attached thereto by a spring 17. (Shown in Figs. 8 and 10.) The rim of the uppermost cartridge engaged by the check is slightly in the path of the bolt.. When the bolt is drawn out, it presses the rim down and clears itself; but when the bolt is pushed hack to place the tongue 14 of the cut-off F strikes the projecting portion ofthe rim of the upper eartridge'and carries the cartridge forward, the bullet engaging an inclined surface 19 at the bottom of the breech of the barrel. 8 I have shown n. cartridge started to the barrel, the rim of -which cartridge bears upon the next lower cartridge to be held by the check, so that t@ rim of said next lower cartridge is entirely within the magazine.
The check shown In Fig.
Having thus described my invention, I. .i
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a-frearm, a bolt, and a controllingring-or cut-olf mounted to turn ou the bolt, the said cutoff having means for engagement with an extractor and means for engagement with a cartridge in the magazine. y
2; 1n adir-carin, a bolt-head, a controlling ring or cut-oit mounted to turn. on the bolthead and provided with an odset adapted for engagement with an extractor, and means for turning the said controlling device so as to eugagc or disengage the extractor, as described.
3. A con trollin g-rin g or cut-oil` for magazinefirearms, consisting of a ring-body adapted cut-off having an exterior oiseb adapted to f iter the groove in the magazine, and a thumb 'finger piece together wnha projection at a. rintl below the thumb or finger piece, wherer' t-hc said controlling-ringer cutfo may be turnedrnpon theboltf'heed-"nd the offset made to fully Venter or purtiallyeut-er the' lgroove 4in the extractor, or be carried away 2o j from' the Saidv `groove, and whereby also the projection` from the controiling-ring or cut'- f off may be carried'to either side of the upper-i mest cartridge in the magazine or be brought into position to force the cartridge from the magazine. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication'in vthe presence of' two subscribing wiinesses. l
