Description

T. C. JOHNSON.
CARTRIDGE LOADING CLlP. APPLICATION FILED Nov. 2, 1914.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
THoMAs C. JOHNSON, on NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, essreivon To WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co., or NEWHAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
CARTRIDGE-LOADING CLir.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS C. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge- Loading Clips; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the charactors ofreference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a plan view on an enlarged scale of a cartridge-loading clip constructed in accordance with my invention, with cartridges indicated by broken lines in engagement with the stop-fingers of the cartridgeretaining spring. Fig. 2 .a view inside elevation of the loading-clip with the lower ends of the cartridges broken away. Fig. 3 a view of the clip in longitudinalcentral section on the line a-b of Fig. 1, with the lower ends of the cartridges similarly broken away; Fig. 4 a' view of the clip in transverse section on the line cd of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 a corresponding view on the line ef of Fig. 1. Fig. '6 a corresponding view on the line h. 1I of Fig. 1. Fig. 7a view showing acartridge engaged with the curved seat of one of the stop-fingers of the cartridgeretaining spring.
. My invention relatesto-an improvement in cartridge-holding clips orv packets of the Mauser type, the object being to produoe a convenient, effective and durable clip con structed .with particular reference to avoidance of derangement in repeated-use. "With these ends iii-view; my invention consists'in' a cartridge-holding clip having f certain details ofconstructionand combinations of parts'as will be hereinafter de scribed and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying outmy invention as herein shown, I employ a one-piece sheet-metal clip-body slightly-bowed from end to end, comprising a bottom Zand two correspond ing integral side fiangesB, 3, standing at a right angle to the said bottom 2 and extending above and belowthe same as shown 1n .Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive. The clip-body as thus made is I-shaped in cross-sectional form,-
" producing in the outer face of'the body a shallow channel 4, for thejreception of a sheet-metal cartridge retaining spring.
other and engaged by the circular flanges .9-
produced by forming cannelures 10 in the butt-ends or heads of the cartridges 11, which are thus held in place. I
The cartridge-retaining spring 5. is held in place in the bottom of the channel 4 by means of two oppositely located fingers 12 cut from the inside Walls of the folded outer edges of the side fianges.3 'midway the length thereof and turneddown upon the edges of the spring midway the length of the same, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
To permit the cartridges 11 to be fed out of'the clip into'the gun, the cartridge-retaining spring 5, is provided with. two pairs Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 23, 1915. Application filed November 2, 1914. Serial No. 869,920.
of laterally extending operating-arms 13 which project through cuts. 14 formed in the respective side flanges 3, and have their projecting outer ends turned inward for their better co-action with the inclined surfaces formed,- as usual, in the un for springing the ends of the said spring 5 so as toclear its stop-fingers 6 from the cir-- cular flanges 9 of the cartridges. As shown, the spring 5 is stiflened bythree parallel ribs 15 extending nearly throughout its length. The lateral operating-arms 13 are 7 also stiffened by ribs 16extending outward v frbm the outer ribs 15.
To prevent the ends of the spring 5 from being sprung beyond their limit of complete recovery, it is furnished near each of its ends with a pair of -laterally arranged safety-fingers 17 extending under stop-lugs 18 cut from the inner I faces of the outer edges of the side flanges 3 and turned over the said fingers 17 as shown in Fig. 3, wherep by the play of the ends of the spring 5'is held within safe limits. j The cartridge-stop fingers 6 formed upon the projecting ends of the spring 5 and playing in clearance cuts 19 in the ends of the bottom 2 of the clip-bod their, H extreme ends shaped to f m v s e 20 conforming in curvature to the curvature of the circular flanges 9 of the cartridges, whereby the end cartridges are more securely held and less liable to be accidentally displaced or ridden over the stop-fingers 6,
I claim:
1. In a cartridge-holding clip, the combination with a channeled clip-body, of a cartridge-retaining spring applied .to the outer" faceof the said body and adapted to retain the cartridges therein and to be operated for their successive release, and provided at each end with one or more laterally arranged safety-fingers co-acting with the said clipbody on the outside thereof for preventing the ends of the said spring from being oversprung for releasing the cartridges.
2. In a cartridge-holding clip, the combination with a channeled clip-body, of a car tridge-retaining spring applied to the said body and formed with laterally projecting operating-arms, the said spring being furnished with three parallel stifi'ening ribs and the said operating-arms being stiffened 'by ribs merging into the said longitudinal stifl'ening ribs. V W
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THoMAso, JOHNSON.
