UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT EDWIN REARDON, OF OTTAIVA, CANADA.
PHOTOGRAPHlC-PLATE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,394, dated October 23, 1900.
Application filed November 13, 1899. Serial No. 736,844. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.
Be it known that 1, ROBERT EDWIN REAR- DON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, in the Province of Ontario. in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Photographic-Plate Holders or Envelops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an inexpensive and efficient holder or envelop for a single photographic plate or cut film, which holder is made of a one-piece blank of paper or cardboard adapted to be folded across the middle transversely, the front half or portion having an aperture for exposure of the plate in the camera and side margins to fold over the back. half portion, said back half having a stamped depression to receive the plate, side margins folding inwardly On the blank to make a grooved join t, a reinforcing end'margin folding outwardly, and a cover sliding in said grooved joint, the inlet for said cover provided with a tubular rubber cushion fitting into channels in the blank and covered by a textile strip to retain the plate and close the entrance when said cover is inserted to exclude light from the photographic plate.
Figure l is a diagram of a blank as 'cut integral from a sheet of cardboard or paper. Fig. 2 is a diagram showing the impressed portion for receiving the photographic plate and a tubular cushion and by dotted lines the scored margins. Fig. 3 isa diagram showing the holder or envelop in a more advanced state of completion and the tubular cushion and flexible strip to exclude light. Fig. et is a front view Or plan of the holder complete. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section enlarged, the sliding cover partly withdrawn from the finished plate-holder or envelop; and Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the same.
The blank is cnt integral from paper or cardboard and folded upon itself at the middle transversely, A being the front half and B the back half.
2 is the aperture or Opening in the front half for exposure of the photographic plate Or film C, and 3 is the sunken or depressed portion stamped in the back half to receive said photographic plate flush with the marginal surface.
et is a cardboard or paper which slides between the halves A and B to close the aperture 2 to protect the photographic plate before and after exposure.
5 represents corresponding grooves impressed in the blank near both ends from the inside to coincide when the blank is folded, and in one of said grooves is cemented a rubber tube or cushion 6, covered by a dexible strip 7, of textile material, one edge cemented to the blank intermediately of the tube and the outer edge to exclude light from the plate, and said strip extends a sufficient distance over the stamped depression 3 to hold therein the plate C when inserted.
The side margins of the back half of the blank have a scored strip d, Fig. 2, which folds inwardly upon the blank (see Fig. 3) to form a portion of the guide-grooves in which the cover a slides. The two halves or portions A and B are folded together along the divisional scored lines Z), and the over-extending margin d. of the front is turned over the edge ofthe back and cemented to the back, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, to make a tight joint and to complete the grooves in which the cover 4 slides. The end edge of the back has a scored margin c, which folds outwardly upon the blank and is cemented thereto to reinforce Or stilfen the edge at the entrance for the sliding` cover for durability and effectiveness.
I claim as my invention- A photographic-plate holder consisting of a One-piece envelop of material impervious to light, having a stamped depression 3 to receive the photographic plate, said envelop having an Opening or entrance at one end provided with a scored reinforcing-margin c, a cardboard closure /tsliding in said opening and in guidegrooves in the envelop, the envelop being provided with grooves 5 impressed therein to coincide within said opening or entrance, a cushion G, cemented to the envelop in one of said grooves, anda iiexible strip 7 Of textile material cemented along one edge to the envelop, so that the opposite edge of said strip will loosely overlie said cushion, for exclusion of light, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT EDVIN REARDON.
