FILM-PACKAGE AND HOLDER.
Application filed September 30, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Film-Packages and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an exposure appliance for photographic films or plates and is adapted to provide efficient and effective means for loading a plate holder in day light. Devices of this character which have heretofore been used have either been too complicated or inefiective in use to be practical and it is the primary object of my invention to provide simple, effective and inexpensive means for overcoming these ob-- jections.
A further object of my invention 1s to provide an improved appliance of the character specified which can be used with any ordinary plate holder without changes.
In the drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective of a plate holder showing my invention applied thereto, the envelop which is employed being partially withdrawn; Fig. 2 is another perspective of the plate holder show.- ing the envelop inserted but in closed position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in section of the plate holder showing my invention applied to each side thereof, the fiap of the envelop in the upper side of the holder being clamped below the hinged end of the holder and the flap on the envelop in the lower side of the holder is closed position;
the hinged end of the holder on the lower side of the holder being in partly open position; Fig. 4 is a plan of the film and film mount; Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line A-A, Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the envelop; Fig. 7 is a perspective of the envelop inclosing a film therein; Fig. 8 is a section of Fig. 7 taken on the line BB, and Fig. 9 is a perspective of what I have chosen to term the adapter.
In the drawings A indicates a plate holder of usual construction having a rectangular frame composed of two opposite parallel sides 2 and 3 and opposite end 4. Secured in the sides and ends of the plate holder and lying centrally disposed in a plane parallel with the front and back faces thereof is a partition 5 of usual construction. On both sides of this partition Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19,1913.
Serial No. 723,118.
longitudinal slots 6 and 7 are formed in the sides 2 and 3 0f the holder and spaces are left between the end pieces 8 and the partition which communicate with the slots 6 and 7 whereby a film package composed of an envelop 9 and film can be inserted and withdrawn from the holder on either side of partition 5 in the usual manner. The end 1 of the plate holder is provided with hinged flaps 8 the method of hinging being by means of a strip of flexible material 10 glued or otherwise secured to the end 4: and the edge portions of said flaps whereby said flaps are free to swing out from a posi tion flush with the surface of said plate holder. The plate holder thus described is of ordinary construction and the film package constructed in accordance with my invention is adapted to be applied thereto.
The film mount 11 in the form of a sheet or plate made of any suitable material such as card board has secured in fiat condition upon its surface by gluing or any other suitable means a photographic film 12. One end of the mount 11 is formed with a flap 18 and has secured to its back a tongue 14 by gluing or any other suitable means. The projecting end of the tongue is perforated at 15. Vhen the film package is loaded previous to its application to the plate holder the film mount is inclosed by the envelop with its flap 13 sealed over the surface of the envelop as illustrated in Fig. 7. While in this position and with its sealed end first the film package may be slid in the slots in the sides of the frame on either side of the partition 5, into the position illustrated in Fig. 2.
Positioned on either side of the partition 5 and between said partition and either of said film packages is what I have chosen to term an adapter 17 in the form of a plate made of card board or any other suitable material. This adapter drops freely be tween the sides and ends of the plate holder before the film package is placed in said holder and is spaced with its surface out of contact with the film package. Each adapter has upon its inner end which is adapted to adjoin one of the flaps 8, a guard in the form of a strip folded or pinched over the inner edge of the adapter, said strip being formed with upturned edge 19 facing inwardly as illustrated and a spring catch 20 having a key 21 which is adapted to enter the perforation 15 in the tongue 1a to edge 19 of the guard is adapted to receive the fold crease of the fiap of the film mount and the flap of the film mount is adapted to be turned back over the guard 19 and clamped below one of the flaps 8 as illustrated in Fig. 1. In this position the guard 19 serves to hold the flap out of the way during an exposure in the camera and prevents light leaking into the envelop before the envelop is withdrawn and before the plate holder is placed in the back of the camera. The guard strip has its body and upturned edge 19 notched at 25 said notch extending through the adapter plate to admit the key 21 freely through the tongue 14:. The spring catch 20 is secured to the upper edge of the guard and its tendency is to press and hold its key 21 engaged through the tongue 1 1. The catch 20 may be lifted against its tension until its key is lifted out of engagement with the tongue so that after the flap 13 has been resealed over the face of the envelop both the envelop and the film with its mount can be withdrawn simultaneously by pulling upon the extension 16-of the envelop.
In order to assist in making the joint between the film mount and envelop light.
proof and to prevent the film mount from tearing the end edges of the envelop, clips 22 made of cloth or any other suitable ma terial may be secured over the end corners of the envelop by gluing or other suitable means, leaving the envelop free to slide upon the film mount. The guard element may be secured by pinching its folded portion tight upon the adapter plate 17 or said strip can be glued or otherwise fastened upon the otherwise fastened to the partition when de- 1 sired. It is however advantageous to leave the adapters free to be inserted or removed from the plate holder without fastening 3 them to the partition thus providing a plate holder free to be used either with plates in the ordinary manner or with my improved film package when desired.
In use the fihn package is first inserted in the plate holder as illustrated in Fig. 2 and the key 21 lifted into engagement with the tongue 1-1- by releasing the catch 20 with its key into the slot 15. The seal 23 over the flap 13 is then bro-ken and said flap turned back over the guard 19 and catch 20 and the hinged end 8 turned down over the end of the flap 13 thus holding said flap in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 while the envelop 9 remains i the position illustrated in the upper half of Fig. 3 and thus preventing light from leaking into the envelop and spoiling the film. The plate holder may then be filled on its other side and placed in the back of the camera with an unexposed film side facing the lens in readiness for an exposure. The envelop 9 is then withdrawn from over the unexposed film. After the exposure has been made the envelop is closed over the film in the holder and removed from the camera. The hinged end 8 is then lifted into superior position and the flap turned down and sealed over the envelop. The catch can then be raised and the envelop with the film sealed therein withdrawn from the holder. It should be understood that the slots 6 and 7 in said holder are the same as the usual slots employed in the ordinary holder frame in which the usual light excluding slides are adjusted over sensitized plates.
The terms film and plate as employed in the above description and following claims should be considered synonymous as the use of either term is intended to include the other and should be construed accordingly.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of inv invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment. thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A light excluding envelop having one end open, a film mount slidable into said envelop through its open end having a flap adapted to close over a side of said envelop and a perforated tongue projecting from the flap end of said mount, for the purposes specified.
2. A light excluding envelop having an open end, a photographic film and a mount carrying said film having a flap adapted to close over an end of said envelop and an engaging tongue projecting from said mount beyond the closed flap, for the purposes specified.
3. A light tight packet for a photographic sensitized surface consisting of an envelop having an open end, reinforcements over the corners of said open end and a sensitized surface mount slidable into said open end between said reinforcements and having a flap adapted to close over a side of said envelop.
4, A plate exposing device consisting of a plate holder having slide slots therein, an adapter fitting freely in said holder having a catch, and a film packet having an envelop slidable in said slots and a film mount slidable into and out of said envelop and having a tongue adapted to be engaged by said catch and 'a flap adapted to close over said envelop.
5. A plate exposing device consisting of a plate holder having slide slots therein, an adapter in said holder having a catch and guard on one end and a film packet having an envelop slidable in said slots and a film mount slidable into and out of said envelop, said mount having a tongue adapted to be engaged by said catch and a flap adapted to close over said envelop and said guard having an upwardly slanting surface adapted to receive and hold the flap end of said mount and envelop down whereby light is excluded from said envelop when the free end of said flap is turned up.
6. A plate exposing device consisting of a plate holder having slide slots therein and a hinged section upon one end, an adapter fitting freely in said holder having a catch and a guard secured to one end, a film packet having an envelop slidable in said slots and a film mount slidable into and out of said envelop having a tongue adapted to be engaged by said catch and a fla adapted to close over said envelop, said guard being adapted to receive and hold the flap end of said mount and envelop to exclude light from the envelop when said flap is turned up over said guard and said hinged section being adapted to hold the free end of said flap down upon the holder when it is turned back over said guard and away from over said envelop.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
