To alt whom it may concern:
ne it known mm1, Epwm R. STORM, a 'atizen of the United` States,l residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Divisible ihelf, of which the follow-ingis a specification.
My invention relates to shelving or stands for hooks, cards, photographs, or other articles which it is desired to place on edge and hold in an upright position; and the objects .f my invention are, first, to provide a shelf with partitions for dividing the shelf or stand in to suitable spaces for the reception of books or articles, and, second, topro'vide a partition that may readily he adjusted to place or rcadjusted whenever it may be desired to change the spacing. by means of the devices illustrated in the acco'ni partying drawings, in which- Figure l is an isometrical projection of the shelf or stand with-zt number of the partitions indicated. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the shelf or stand, showing lhe holes'in the base and back-piece. Fig.v 3 is a view of one of the partitions. Fig. 4 is au end view ofthe snelf or stand, showing the partition iu place. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the shelf or stand, showing a form of sheet-metal construction.
Fig. 6 is an end view of the shelf or stand,A
showing two shelves joined back to back, formingr a double shelf or stand.
Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the'several illustrations.
The shelf 4or stand shown in Fig. 1 consists of a base 1 and aback-piece2and is formed of any suitable material and joined at I in any convenient manner, so that the backpiect- 3 will be perpendicular to the base 1, as indicated. The base 1 is provided with in a line parallel to the front edge of the base 1. The u'pperedge of the back-piece 2 is provi-led with the series of holes 5, registering with the holes 4 and in a line parallel thereto.
The movable partitions G, formed as indicated at Fig. 3, have their ends a fitted t'o euter the holes 4 and their ends b fitted to en ter the holes 5. The portion cis formed to extend from the end a near the surface of the base 1 toward the'back-piece 2. The portion d. is formed to extend Aaway from the base l I attain these objectsl the 'cook or land isinolinedlow-ird the back-piece 2. The portion extends from the portion d to the end b and is joined therewith. The base l,
with the back-piece 2, having been placed as a stand on a table or desk or as a vshelion any suit-able support, and anyA partition (Shaving its end .ft inserted in any desired hole 4: and its end b in the hole 5 registering therewith, will be held firmly in piace, any hooker article desired to be held in an upright position be ingplaeed on the hase l, with oneedge against the baek-pieee2 and one side agains'the partit-ion 6, and another partition 3 heing'placed in position with its end (t inserted in the hole 4 nearest the book or article, and end b in the hole 5 registering therewith ivill be held along its lower edge and along a perpendicular edge sufficient-1y to maintain itin. an upright posi-.
tion. Upon removing the book or artielethc space which it occnpiedon the stand or shelf remains an allotted portion ready to receive e article. Upon returning the bock or article to the shelf o r stand the portions r of the partition G act as guides to direct the book or article in its movement, while. the portions d by reason of their inclination act as guides to place the-advancing perpendicular edge between the portions eof the partitions 6.
it is evident that it' it be desired to have a wider or narrower book or article occupy the space between the two partitions 6 set up one of them may he moved to any other hole l and its registering hole 5 and. also that the whole sl .elf or stand may be divided as desircd by setting up a suitable number of par-l titions 6.- I
As indicated in Fig. 5, the base 1 and back piece 2 may be formed of sheet met-al.
In Fig. 6 is shown a variation in which the base 1 is provided with a row of holes along two edges and a back-piece i. placed along. the center line midway between the two rows of holes A, the upper edge of the hack-picce 2 being provided with two rows of holes 5, thus forming a double shelf or stand.
Having described my invention, I claimV and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. 'Ihecomhinaticm in a divisible shelf of a Abase havingr a series of holes, a backpiece joined to the base, having a series of holes registering with the holesin the base, and i movable partitions havingr ends adapted to enter and be vheld by theholeain the base and bnck-piece. v
2. The combination in a divisible shelf ofa hase havingr a series of holes a back-piece joined o o the base, havin'g a aeries of holes registering with the holes in the base, and
movable partitions having an edge extend' 'ing away from the base and inclined towardl the back-piece and ends adapted to enter the holes. J
3. In a divisible'shelfa movable partitionhaving a portion exirending from the front toward the backof Lhe's'helf, a portion ex" tending away from bhe base-shelf, and iuolined' toward the back, a' portion extending,
to the back and ends adapted to hold the partition' in place.
4. The combination in a divisible shelfoi a.
base. having a series of holes parallel toits front edge, a back-piece havnga series of I holes in its upper odge, said series being par-- allel to and registering with the series of holes' in the base, and movable partitions eachhaving'an end adapted to enter a hole in the base, a portion parallel to thebase extending from said end toward the bacino'v poxfaion inclined from tahevfr'ont toward Athe' j f, back, a portion extending to nlxe back-piece and an end adapted to enter a hole in the. v
back-piece. y
5. The combination in a divisible shelf ola toward the baokgpieue 2 a portion e vextiend- 4o ing to the backpieoe 2 and an end. b adapted to enter and be held by thehole 5.
