ICE-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,014, dated October 16, 1900.
Application filed July 19, 1900. Serial No. 24,235. (No model.)
To a l 242710727 it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residingin Manhattan borough, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful I1nprovements in IceBags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bag which can he filled with ice, hot or cold water, or the like, the bag being so shaped or made as to readily fit or adapt itself to various parts of the body and to be attached or secured in place.
This invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the bag. Fig. 2 is an edge View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the bag filled. Fig. i shows a modification.
The bag is shown with bottom a, and top I). The bottom and top are flat or extended, the edges at the sides 0 and ends 61 of the bag being comparatively sharp or thin. The top is plaited or doubled. Two plaits e are shown; but one or any other number of plaits can be made to answer. As the plait opens the capacity of the bag increases to enable a thorough charge of ice or other substance to be passed into the bag. closes or doubles, so that the plait, with the empty bag, lies flat or takes up but little space. The bag can then be conveniently packed or put aside. The edges or sides a are shown concaved or bent inwardly, thereby giving the bag a shape which has been found convenient of application to various parts of the body. For example, if the bottom or lowermost point of the curve or concave c is applied just back of an ear the bag toward its end parts e will spread or eificiently cover the side of the head and neck. As the plait or doubling e is located at a distance from the edge 0, such plait will open and close without affecting the contour or curve or concavity of such edge. The oppositely-located attachments or eyelets f at the end portions cZ enable the bag to be tied or secured to the personas, for example, about the head, the abdomen, or elsewhere.
The mouth or opening of the bag can be \Vhen empty, the plait closed by a suitable stopperor plug g. This month being located at the center portion of the top I) is in convenient position for filling or emptying. During filling the flat bottom a can rest on a table or the like and the mouth or top 5 can be gradually raised as the bag fills.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is
1. As a new article of manufacture, the water, 850., bag, having an extended top and bottom, with the top portion adapted, When the bag is collapsed, to reversely fold one portion under the other, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the water, dtc. bag having an extended top and bottom, said top provided with lateral plaits on forming-lines extending approximately parallel in horizontal planes and adapted to provide for the reverse infolding of said top, from a common or single point at each side, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, the water, due, bag having an extended top and bot tom, said top provided with lateral plaits on forming-lines extending approximately parallel, in horizontal planes and adapted to provide for the reverse infolding of said top, from a common or single point at each end, said bag having inwardly-bent or concaved sides, substantially as set forth.
at. As a new article of manufacture, the water, 850., bag having an extended top and bottom, and a filling-opening in said top, said top provided with lateral plaits on forminglines extending approximately parallel, in horizontal planes, upon opposite sides of said filling-opening and adapted to provide for the reverse infolding of said top from a common or single point, at each end, said bag havinginbent or concaved portions, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL HOGAN. W'itnesses:
W. O. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
