METALLURGICAL FU RNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,941, dated October 16, 1900.
Application filed November 21, 1899. Serial No. 737,789. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern):
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SWINDELL, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metallurgical Furnaces, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for enabling renewal or repair of the portions of the walls of metallurgical furnaces adjoining the doors thereof to be readily and expeditiously effected without discontinuance of or substantial interference with the operation of the furnace.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a portion of a side wall of a metallurgical furnace, illustrating an application of myinvention; Fig. 2, ahorizontal section through the same at the line g g of Fig.1, and Fig. 3 a vertical section on the center line of Figs. 1 and 2.
In the operation of metallurgical furnaces, in which a comparatively high degree of heat is maintained, delay and expense are involved in efiecting renewal or repair of the portions of the walls adjacent to the charging-openings when deteriorated by the action of the heat, such operation ordinarily necessitating a cessation of the operation of the furnace and involving a corresponding loss of time and waste of fuel.
In the practice of my invention in order to enablerenewal or repair of the Wall portions surrounding the doors 9, which close the charging-openings 8 of the combustion-chamber, to be conveniently and quickly effected without interfering with the operation of the furnace said openings are provided with removable door-frames 10, each formed of firebrick and having an opening, the top of which is suitably arched. Vertical facing-strips 28 of metal, between which the door 9 is fitted to slide, are connected to the door-frame, and the frame is held in position on the wall of the combustion-chamber by removable keys 29,Which are driven into position between the outer faces of the facing-strips 28 and stop bars 30, passing through the adjacent staybars 31 of the furnace-wall. The door-frame is braced at its lower end by bottom plates 32, resting on a wall-plate 33 on the furnace-wall.
If the door-frame should become so affected by the heat that renewal or repair is required, the door-frame and door may be readily re moved from the furnace by driving out the keys 29, and a duplicate frame can be immediately put in place without delaying or interfering with the operation of the furnace. The original construction of the furnace will also be facilitated by the employment of the removable door-frame above described, as it can be built with straight walls and the doorframes inserted at the proper places.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a metallurgical furnace, the combination of a combustion-chamber having a charging-opening in its wall, a door-frame formed of a body of refractory material and metallic facing-strips secured thereto, the whole connected removably to the wall of the combustionchamber around the charging-opening, and a door fitted to traverse in the door-frame and control the charging-opening.
2. In a metallurgical furnace, the combination of a combustion-chamber havinga charging-opening in its wall, stay-bars fixed to the Walls,a door-frame having a body of refractory material fittingin a recess of the Wall of the combustion chamber around the chargingopening and metallic facing-strips connected to the body, keys bearing on the facing-strips and on the stay-bars of the wall, and securing the door-frame removably to the combustionchamber, and a door fitted to traverse between the facingstrips and control the chargingopening.
WILLIAM SWINDELL.
