DEVICE FOR PACKING CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,520, dated October 9, 1900.
Application led May 1,1900. Serial No. 15,058. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, FRANK P. FoLsoM, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of Ashland, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Packing Cigars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices for packing cigars and similar articles, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient mechanism for the above-indicated purpose.
The invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a table provided with two packing devices or presses constructed according to myinvention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the table and press lengthwise of the latter. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail of an adjustingbloek employed in connection with my improved press.
The table A may be of any suitable construction and is provided in its front wall or front rail A' with apertures, through which may be projected the top plates B of the press, said plates being mounted to slide in a direction from front to rearin runways A2, so that the top plates may be pushed back into the table to place them out of the way when not required. The top plates are provided at their rear ends with depending brackets B', to which are hinged the bottom plates O, as at C'. The top plates have apertures or slots B2, preferably wider at the bottom than at the top, and the bottom plates have wider openings C2 of the same size both at the top and the bottom. These openings receive links or bails D, substantially of inverted- U shape, the ends of which are pivoted at E to operating-levers E at a distance from the hinges E2, which connect said levers with the lower plates C, said hinges being adjacent to the front edges of the openings C2. The plates B and C are of substantially the same size and are superposed. The upper or horizontal member of the bail or link D is seated and has a plurality of grooves F', adapted 1 to receive the link D, and a plurality of apertures F2 for the reception of the securingbolt Gr. When the link is to be received in the groove F', which is at the thick end of the wedge-block, the block is turned around, so that the thin end of the wedge will be toward the front rail A. It will be observed that the block F enables the normal position of the link D to be adjusted, and,in fact, the block constitutes a means for raising and lowering the lower end of the link. Other devices might be used for the same purpose, such as a nut located above the plate B and screwing on the upper end of the link D, which would then be provided with a threaded portion.
In operation the lower plate C isnormally in the inclined position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, so that there is a sufficient space between the two plates B and C for a box of cigars. The bottom of this box l-I is placed upon the lower plate C, and the lid H' of the box is opened to one side, as shown in Fig. 1, and a board of the same size as the interior of the box is placed on top of the cigars. The lower plate, with the box, is then raised until the said board engages the upper plate B, and then the leverE is swung forward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, producing the requisite pressure upon the board and through it upon the cigars to closely pack the latter in the box. It will be observed thatin swinging the lever E forward the link D passes from the rear of the hinge E2 to a position in frontof the hinge, so that the lever is locked automatically and will not return to its original position until actuated by the operator. The wedge-shaped block F may be adjusted as described to vvary the pressure exerted by the swinging of the lever E, as will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the table or support, the top plate mounted to slide therein, the bottom plate pivotally connected with the top plate, and mechanism for pressing the plates together.
IOO
2. The combination of the top plate, the bottom plate pivotally attached thereto, the aotuating-lever pivoted to the bottom plate, and the link pivotally connected with the top plate and with the actuating-lever.
3. The combination of the top plate, the bottom plate pivoted thereto, the actuating-lever pivoted to the bottom plate, the link pivotally connected with the lever and with the top plate, and an adjusting device for varying the length of that portion of the link which is between the top plate and the actuating-lever.
4. The combination ofthe top plate, the bottom plate pivotecl thereto, the actuating-lever pivoted to the bottom plate, the wedgeshaped block secured adjustably to the top plate and provided with a plurality of grooves or sockets, the link having one end adapted to be seated pivotally in one of said sockets, and the other end pivoted to the actuatinglever.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK P. FOLSOM.
