HENRY E. RILE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.. ASSIGNOR TO ASA L. SHIPMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 65,948, dated June 18, 1867.
MACHINE FOR COATING PAPER WITH MUGILAGE, (be.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. RILE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and.
improved Machine for Coating Paper, &c., and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a, similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The present invention relates to a machine more particularly intended for the coating of paper with mucilage or gum, or other adhesive material which will admit of being dissolved with water, although the machine can be adapted to the coating of other surfaces, and also used with other liquids, and the machine cmbraced herein is more especially designed to be used ii -the preparation of paper sheets for the manufacture of the wellknown adhesive letter and invoice file, so called.
My improved machine consists of a frame arranged to slide in a vcrticalplane when operated through a treadle suitably connected therewith, a reservoir for the mucilage or other liquid, and a horizontal sliding platform or table, the said vertical sliding frame carrying a series of'brushes suitable for applying the gum or mucilage to the paper, and the whole machine being constructed and combined in its several parts so 'asto; operate in a manner as will be now described, reference being had-to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which Figure I is a central longitudinal vertical section of the machine; and
Figure 2, a transverse vcrtical'section taken in the plane of the line a- 1-, fig. 1.
A, in the drawings, represents the framework of the machine, which, in its construction, is to be suitable to receive the various working and other parts to the same. B, a frame secured in a vertical position within the framework A; and C a frame arranged to more up and down within and between the side-posts D to the framework A. This vertical sliding frame B projects above the upper side of the main framework A, and at such end it rests upon spiral springs, E, placed over and about the guide-posts F. In the upper cross-rail G, of the frame, B, a series of brushes, H, is hold, they being secured at equal and regular distnucesapart. I, a box or receptacle secured in framework A below the brushes: IT, and in position for the brushes to dip into the mucilagc or gum contained in it, by simply depressing the said frame 13. P, a platform or table-arranged to slide on framework A in ahorizontal plane, and ma plane just below that of the brushes H secured in frame B and J a treadle bring to cross-bar K, in lowcrportiou of framework A, and L a lever connecting such trcndlc,
through a cord or line M, with the lowerfrailN of the sliding vertical frame B.
In the operation of the machine above described, the paper which is to be coated or "gummcd" by the brushes in the sliding vertical frame B is first secured to or placed upon the table or platform I, when depressing the sliding frainethrough its treadle sufiiciogtly for its brushes to dip into the mucilage or gum in the box I, remove the foot from the-treadle, leaving such frame free to rise by the action of the springs E, when then sliding the table forward under the brushes; by'such brushes the paper then coated or 'gulnmcd in corresponding lines or directions, the pressure of the brushes upon the paper being susceptible of regulation by the application of the foot to the working treadlcl Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to :L-(Hllc by Letters Patent- A machine for coating paper, &c., in which are combined a frame carrying a series of brushes, whether one or more in number, a. platform or table, and a reservoir or receptacle for the liquid to be applied by the brushes. when all are colnbinedand arranged together so as to operate substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 13th day of March, 1867.
HENRY E. RILE.
