Beit known that I, EDWIN H. PRICE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Lansdale, county of Montgomery, and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a certain new anduseful Improvement in Shutter-Workers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in shutter-workers, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device by which the shutter may be operated from the inside of the roomv and locked in any position or entirely closed.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use, the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a section of a portion of a window, showing my improvement applied thereto and to the shutter, the latter being locked in one of its opened positions; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the shutter unlocked and ready for f urthe'r manipulation; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of a window, showing my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the slotted plate; Fig. 5, a detail perspective of a portion of the notch-bar and operating-ar'm, and Fig. 6 a section at the line x of Fig. 2.
In carrying out lmy invention as here embodied I secure a bar or strip A to the shutter B, and this bar has in its lower edge the notches C for the purpose hereinafter -set forth.
D represents the operating-arm, which is secured to the spindle E, having its outer end turned upward and slotted, as indicated at F. This slot embraces the bar A and is somewhat longer than the width of the bar, so as to have a vertical movement thereon. The spindle is looselyjournaled in the bearing Gr, its lower end being set in the slotted plate H, and a yoke I is iitted upon the spindle so as not to interfere with the revolving of the latter and has journaled therein the shaft J A beveled gear K is secured upon the spindle and meshes with the beveled pinion L, secured upon the shaft J, so that when said shaft is revolved the spindle will also be revolved, thus swinging the -arm D, which in turn will swing the shutter open or closed, as the case may be.
The slot in the plate H is deflected at its inner end, as indicated at M, so that when the lower end of the spindle E is lying in this portion of the slot it cannot be displaced by pressure upon the arm D,'thus securely lock ingthe shutter by the engagement of the lower With these ends in view this invention conedge of the slot F with one of the notches C. When it is desired to swing the shutter in one direction or the other, the handle N, carried upon the inner end of the spindle J, is irst moved upward, thereby drawing the lower end of the spindle E out of the deflected portion of the slot M, which will lower the outer end of the arm sufliciently to carry the lower edge of the slot F out of engagement with the notch C, after which the revolving of the handle N will revolve the spindle E through the gears and swing the arm, so as to alter the position of the shutter as desired, it being understood that there is sufficient play inthe hearing G to permit the tilting of the spindle E for the purposes just described.
The handle N has a socket therein adaptedVV thereon. There is preferably a series of thesey notches in order that the handle may be adapted to various thicknesses of windowframes. The shank of the handle is journaled in the plate Q, and this plate is itted to slide in the escutcheon R, so that the upand-down movement of the handle is thus provided for. A spring S is arranged to bear upon the yoke I, so as to normally hold it and the shaft journaled therein in their lowered position, and thus maintain the operating-arm in its locked position.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that a shutter when having my improvement applied thereto may be operated from the interior of the room without raising the window and may be held in any desired position, either entirely open or at various ICO angles or entirely'closed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and when closed the shutter will be locked against being opened from the outside and yet may be readily opened when occasion is required from the inside by manipulating the handle N, as before set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. In combination with a window-shutter, a bar secured thereon, an operating-arm, the outer end of which embraces said bar, means on the bar for engaging the tilting arm, a tilting spindle to which the arm is secured, a slotted plate in which the lower end of the spindle is journaled, a yoke carried by the spindle, a shaft journalcd in said yoke, beveled gears for transmitting rotation from the shaft to the spindle, and a handle attached to the shaft l'or revolving the san1e,as specified.
2. In combination, a shutter, abar secured thereto, an operatingarm having an upturned slotted end embracing said bar, and adapted to engage notches formed in the latter, a spindle to which said arm is attached and so journaled as to be tipped, a plate in which the lower end of said spindle is journaled, said plate having a beveled slot therein, a beveled gear secured to the spindle, a
yoke attached to the spindle, a shaft journaled in said yoke, a beveled pinion secured upon said shaft and meshing with the gear, notches formed in the outer end of the shaft, a handle having a socket therein adapted to t upon said shaft to turn the latter, a plate in which the handle is journaled, and an escutcheon in which the last-named plate is fitted to slide, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The herein-described combination of a shutter, a notched bar secured thereto, an operating-arm having an upturned slotted end embracing said bar, a spindle to which said arm is secured, said spindle being adapted to tip, a yoke attached to the spindle, a springl adapted to hear upon said yoke, and adapted to hold the spindle in its Vertical position, a shaft journaled in the yoke, beveled gears for transmitting rotalion from the shaft to the spindle, and means for manipulating the shaft, as specified.
