Description
UNITED STAWENT GFFICE.-
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,438, dated December 13, 1859.`
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LATHROP, of East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Shutter or Blind for Windows, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the `following is a full, clear, and `exact descriptlon of the same, reference being had to the The ob'eet of my invention 1s to produce a shutter or blind that is at once simple, cheap,
Aeasily operated and fire-proof; and it consists 1n combining with a metallic plate provided with slots and water-sheds or slats a. slotted slide in such a manner that the light may be admitted or excluded at pleasure, and that a fire-proof blind is produced.
To enable others skilled in the art to .make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A metal plate A, is furnished with slots a, and intermediate spaces o. In order to form the slots, incisions are made on three sides, and the metal is now bent up to an angle of about 35 degrees, more or less, so as to form watersheds or slats o, similar to the slats ofV common wooden blinds. The form of these slats, and the manner in which they are bent is clearly shown in Figs. 1, and.
I do not intend to confine niyselfhowever` to the precise form of the slots and slats` represented inthe drawing as` the same can i. be made in various `forms withfequal aol-` vantage. y
rl`he edges of the plateA, are turnedover 1 so as to form grooves d, as clearlyshownin Fig. 3, and these grooves form; guidesora slotted slide B." This slideI `is made `offakqgs` V plain piece of sheet metaland theslots e, in y the same, are cut out so" asto correspond in size and in the distance in whichthey are j; apart, with the slots la, in the `plate "and the spaces between: said slots "are large p enough to cover up the slots a, if the slideis brought in the properposition.` p Thuswhen the slide B,is brought in such a position, p that the slots o," ref gister` with" thepslots a," if light and air is admitted, but ifythespacesf between the slots e, are brought to cover` the y 1f slots a, the blindis perfectly shut `andrenclered fire-proof.` l ff f It will be easily understood how, by la simple device the slide l mayVbemade to jj moveup and down andhow it can be ar rested in the required position@` E What I claim as ne and dsire to secur by Letters Patent, is, y l 1 y The arrangement of the plate `Apwith: slots a, slats or'watersheds 0,;and grooves al," in combination withlthe slotted slide B, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
