UNrrnn STATES CHARLES W. T. DAVIES, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR, BY
DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO LEONARD C.
INGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BAILEY, OF WASH- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 659,135, dated October 2, 1900. Application filed April 6, 1898. Serial No. 676,690. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. T. DAVIES, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented oertain new and useful Improvements in Finger-Stamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practice the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hand stamps, and more particularly to a stamp adapted to be secured to the finger of the operator, my object being, primarily, to provide a simple device which can berapidly operated to bring any one of several stamps into play.
To this end my invention relates to the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an illustrative view of the invention as applied to a hand. Fig. 2 is a view of the invention, showing the printing characters; and Fig. 3is a view of the invention, showing a modified form of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A represents a sleeve adapted to fit over a finger of the operator, said sleeve being flexible and to this end preferably constructed of soft rubber. This construction also causes the sleeve to fit the finger snugly, and thus be retained in proper position. If desired suitable openings C can be provided for ventilation.
The type or printing characters B are socured upon the sleeve or formed thereon in any desired manner, and a plurality of sets is provided, these sets being so arranged that they can be brought into play in rapid succession. As here shown, one set is located on the inner face of the sleeve and ata point adapted to come opposite the ball of the first joint of the operator, and a second set is located on the outer face of the sleeve and at a point coming opposite the back of the first joint of the operators finger. This permits rapid use of these two sets of characters.
For example, suppose that the first set is Recd and the second set Ansd. The operator can use either set separately, and if the letter to be stamped has been both received and answered before it is stamped the operator has merely to bend his finger to bring the two stamps into play in rapid succession. This result is due to the fact that the sets of printing characters are located upon opposite faces of the sleevei. (5., upon faces which lie upon opposite sides of the finger when the sleeve is applied.
If desired, a third set of characters can be located on the outer face of the sleeve and at a point opposite the second joint of the operators finger. Thus three difierent impressions can be made in rapid succession.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fingerstamp comprising a flexible sleeve adapted to fit closely a finger of the operator, printing characters upon the inner face of said sleeve at a point adapted to come opposite the ball of the first joint of the finger, and a second set of printing characters on the outer face of said sleeve, whereby by bending the finger the said sets of characters can be brought into playin rapid succession; substantially as described.
2. A finger-stamp comprising a flexible sleeve adapted to fit closely a finger of the operator, printing characters upon the inner face of said sleeve at a point adapted to come opposite the ball of the first joint of the finger, a second set of printing characters upon the outer face of the sleeve and at a point adapted to come opposite the back of the first joint of the operators finger, and a third set of printing characters upon the outer face of 0 the sleeve and at a point adapted to come opposite the back of the second joint of the operators finger, whereby by bending the finger the said sets of characters can be brought into play in rapid succession; substantially as described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a hand-stamp consisting of a single thumbstall constructed throughout of soft rubber or other pliable material which is shaped roo '10 said thumb-stall being provided With an impression character or device also of rubber or otherpliable material; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of March, 1898.
CHARLES W. 'l. DAVIES.
