Description

N01 GSSMGR. Patented Oct 2, I900. C. F. SIMMERMAKER.
COMBINED BARREL AND BAG TRUCK.
(Application filed July 14, 1900.)
(No Model.)
' NITED STATES ATENT FFIGE.
CHARLES F. SIMMERMAKER, OF TIPTON, IOWA.
COMBINED BARREL AND BAG TRUCK.
SRECIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 659,108, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed July 14, 1900. Serial No. 23,646. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SIMMER- MAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tipton, in the county of Cedar and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Barrel and Bag Truck; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a combined barrel and bag truck.
The object of the invention is to provide a truck of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production and one which may be easily and quickly converted from a barrel-truck into a bag-truck, and vice versa, to enable it to handle either barrels or bags.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sideelevation of my improved truck, showing the parts in the position they assume when the truck is used for handling a barrel. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position the parts assume when the truck is used for handling a bag, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the wheel truck-frame, which may be of any wellknown or approved construction. This truckframe is provided intermediate its length with a downwardly-curved strengthening-bar 2, which forms a support for the bag and also serves to strengthen the framework of the truck. The lower end of the truck is provided with a curved head-piece or saddle 3,- in which the bag rests.
4 denotes a double hook secured by a setscrew 5 to the lower ends of the side pieces. This hook when swung tothe position shown in Fig. l is adapted to engage the chime at the lower end of the barrel.
6 denotes a hook which is hinged to a collar 7, which has a longitudinal adjustment upon the center rail of the truck-frame by means of a set-screw 8. This book is adapted to be swung into engagement with the chime at the upper end of the barrel and prevent its tilting forward when the lower chime is engaged by the first-named hook.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, andadvantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation. It will be seen that the device is exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it isdesigned and that it may be placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed, and desired to be protected by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a truck of the character described, provided intermediate of its length with a downwardly-curved cross-bar extending from side piece to side piece in a plane below the lower edges of the side pieces, a longitudinal bar extending from one end of the truck to the other and resting upon the cross-bar, a downwardly-curved saddle or head secured to the lower end of the truck, a double hook hinged to the side pieces of the truck and adapted to rest in the downwardlycurved head, and a hook hinged to a collar adjustably connected to the longitudinal bar, said hooks having a swinging movement, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto setmy hand in presence-of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAR-LES F. SIMMERMAKER.
