SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,102, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed July 13, 1900.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN W. REAVES, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of Morgan, in the county of Bradley and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Plow, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a cultivator attachment for plows; and the purpose of the invention is to provide simple and effective means whereby cultivator blades or teeth may be arranged at one or at both sides of what is known as a bulltongue plowblade or adapted for use in connection with the share of a turning-plow.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective View of the attachment applied to a bull-tongue plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plow and attachment illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a turning-plow having the improvement applied to it; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views of devices used in connection with the plows and with the attachment for the purpose of connecting the attachment to the plows and plow-beams.
A represents a plow-beam of the ordinary type, having the usual handles B and clevis C, and D represents a clip of any desired construction, which is received by the beam A and is to be held in desired position. To this end the members 12 of the clip extend downward some distance below the under face of the beam and are provided with suitable nuts, the members 12 of the clip being passed through a base-plate l2.
In Fig. 1 I have illustrated the plow as provided with a bull-tongue blade 16, and this blade is provided with a shank 13. The shank 13 consists of two plates placed opposite each other, the plates being ofiset near the top, formingrthereby inner transverse shoulders 14, which are slightly below the beam A. In connection with the bull-tongue shank 13 a bracket 17 is employed. (Shown in detail in Fig. 4.) These brackets are located at the exterior of the shank 13, adjacent to the shoulders 14 therein, and each bracket consists of an upright member provided with an opening 19, and through these openings a bolt 18 is passed, which serves to secure the brackets to the shank 13, and the bolt 18 is placed in close relation to the under face of the beam A. Each bracket is provided with inwardlyextending horizontal lips 20, which engage with the under faces of the shoulders 14, and with an outwardly-extending member 21, in which an opening 22 is made. When the attachment is applied to a bull-tongue blade, a head-plate E is employed, which is shown in detail in Fig. 5, and this head-plate comprises a horizontal member 23, in which a central recess 24 is made to accommodate the shank 13 of the bull-tongue blade 16 and openings 25 at either side of said recess, and the formation of the head-plate E is completed by the addition of a downwardly-extending flange member 26, adapted to'engage with the up .ceives a bolt 28, and said bolt secures the head-plate E to the blade 16.
The head-plate E extends beyond each side of the shank 13 of the blade 16, and the horizontally-extendin g portions of the head-plate are adapted to support horizontal frames F. These frames are usually rectangular in shape, comprising an outer vertical member 28, a lower horizontal member 29, and an up- These frames are attached to the head E by bolts 31, which are passed through the inner ends of the frames and are suitably secured to the frames and to the projecting side portions of the headplate E, said bolts having sleeves 32, located between the horizontal members of the frames F and between the lower horizontal members of said frames and the head-plate E, as is also The shanks 33 of cultivator teeth or shovels 34 are passed through the horizontal members of the frames F and are held in position by means of nuts or other locking devices.
The frames F when in position on a bulltongue plow extend outward and toward the rear, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and these frames are held in this position by main braces 35, attached to the outer ends of the frames F at their upper portions and to the downwardly-projecting members 12 of the clip I), while auxiliary braces 36 are also secured to the downwardly-extending members of the clip D and to the under portions of the frames F at or near their outer ends.
I desire it to be understood that a single pair of braces 35 and 36 only need be employed when two frames 1* are used and that one of the frames may be removed entirely from the bull-tongue plow, if desired, and a single frame be retained either at the right or at the left hand side of the main blade 16, as maybe desired.
In Fig. 3 I have illustrated the adaptation of the attachment to a turning-plow, and in this connection a bracket 37 is secured to the landside of the beam A near the heel of said beam, and a clamp 38 is secured to the moldboard of the plowshare at the landside of said moldboard near the top, the said clatnp 38 being provided with a horizontal flange 39, having a suitable aperture therein, and the clam p 38 is further provided wit-h flanges 40 and 41 at its ends, adapted to extend over and to engage with the working surface of the moldboard. The clamp 38 is secured in position by a suitable set-screw 42, which passes through the flange 41. and engages the shank of the plow. The attachment is the satne as that employed at one side of the bulltongue plow; but the fastening rod'of the frame I is passed through the bracket 37 and through the aperture in the horizontal projection or flange 39 from the clamp 38, the bolt being provided with a suitable nut and a head, and the sleeves 32 are also employed 011 this bolt between the members of the frame F and the under member of the frame and the clamp 38. Under this construction it is obvious that the cultivator attachment may be quickly, conveniently, and readily attached to or detached from any form of plow.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a plow, a beam, a share or blade, a frame, fastening means by which the upper portion of the frame is connected with the beam, another fastening means by which the lower portion of the frame is connected with the share or blade, and cultivator blades or teeth carried by said frame.
2. In a plow, a beam, a share or blade, a frame, fastening means by which the upper portion of the frame is connected with the beam, another fastening means by which the lower portion of the frame is connected with the share or blade, cultivator blades or teeth carried by said frame, and braces extending from the rear portion of the frame forwardly to the beam.
3. In a cultivator attachment for plows, a shank having a shoulder, the shank forming a portion of a blade or share, a bracket having horizontal projections arranged for engagement with a shoulder of the shank, means for securing the bracket to the shank, a tooth-carrying frame connected with a member of the said bracket, and braces for the frame which extend to and are adapted for connection with a plow-beam.
4. In a cultivator attachment for plows, a beam, a shank provided with a shoulder between its ends, a blade or share connected with the shank, a head attached to the blade or share and having an opening through which the shank passes, a bracket attached to the said shank, having inward projections arranged for engagement with a shoulder of the shank, and an outward projection, a toothcarrying frame, a fastening device for the frame passed through the outward projection of the bracket and a portion of said head, braces attached to the frame, and means for connecting the braces with the beam of the plow, as set forth.
