TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, ARTEMAS W. GODDARD, of the town of Clinton', and countyof Worcester', and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Caliper-Rules; and I do hereby declare thatv the following is a full, elem', and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the-annexed drawings, making a part of thisi specification, in which- Figure 1 is a .view of the rule when open for use. Figure 2 is a plan of thc caliper-rule. Figure 3 is a detailedvicw to be hereinafter referred t'o. l The present invention relates yto new and usefr'ilimpro'vement inicaliper-rulesfor measuringdiameters; and consists, first, in the employment of two blades ofsteel, or any other suitable material, so attached to the rule that they shall, when opened to their full extent, answer the purpose specified; second, in the combination of these twoblades with a`sliding gauge, sa'id g'augeto be used for ascertaining the diameter of anrobject after having been spanned by the blades; third, in the employment of rubber-cloth -packing between the blades and the parts' of the rule to which Athey are fastened to prevent` the blades from becoming loose by the weer of the rivets. The packing is put with the cloth side against theblades, and-the rubber side resting on the wood,
thereby preventing the blades, when being opened, lfrom adheringto the rubber.
In the accompanying plate of drawings I have represented my invention, reference being had to 'the same in the following description: Y l v,
a a represent the blades, which, when open, in combination with the rule and thejoint f, iig. 1, Aform the caliper. Z1, tig. 2, shows the position of the blades when not required for'u'se as calipers. e care slots in the blades a 'a for tbc insertion of the thumb-nail when opening them for use.; d d, iigs. 2 and-3, representthe corner of the rule ascut away to uncover the slots che in blndes'a a. The blades a are fastened to the rule by the rivets g dgp figs. 2 and 3, andthe wood is cut away, es shown at c', lig. 2, so that the surface ofthe blades a a shall not be any above the surface of 4the rule, which would prevent theelosing` of the parts h h, g. 2, in a. proper manner. m, iig'. 3, shows the rubber-cloth packing between the blades-.a a and the body of the rule,
Having described the manner in which the devices composing my invention are ltr-ranged, I will proceed to describe howvthe same operate together. i
To ascertain the diameter of an object the rule, fig. 1, is grasped at theponts zlz' and opened, as shown, i
the thumb-nail is inserted in the' slots yc c, and t-he blades a a opened to their fullextent, the object is calipered, and the graduated slide k is drawn out, aridi the distance between the points l lis ascertained by measurement.
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and 'desire to secure by Letters Estone-5 1. The bla-des a a, when arranged as and for the purpose described. l 2. The combined caliper andslidc-gauge rule, when arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
itnesses:
C. F. W. PARKHUnsr, E. RICHARDSON.
