JAMES WILLIS DIXON, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND.
SCREW-ON STOPPER FOR DRlNKlNG-FLASKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 657,921, dated September 18, 19b0. Application filed April 25, 1900. Serial No. 14,314. (No model.)
To (all whom it ntcty concern: I
Be it known that 1, JAMES WILLIS DIXON, man ufacturer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Cornish Place, Sheffield, county of York, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement Connected with Screw-On Stoppers of Drinking-Flasks, (for which I have made an application for a patent in Great Britain, No. 3,484, bearing date February 22, 1900,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to attach the screw-on stopper to the flask by a hinge in such a manner that while allowing perfect freedom of action in screwing or unscrewing the stopper it prevents its misplacement and possible loss, a frequent result when loose or unattached stoppers are used.
I am aware that stoppers have been attached to flasks by a hinge and secured by means of a bayonet-joint; but in actual use these are not satisfactory. My arrangement permits of the stopper taking up the slack caused by repeated applications of pressure upon the cork or other substance which presses upon the mouth of the flask, and is therefore more reliable.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a complete flask made after my invention with the stopper closed; Fig. 2, the same with the stopper opened; Fig. 3, the stopper closed,
shown in section; Fig. 4, the stopper unscrewed, shown in section.
Upon the neck-collar O of the flask F is a projecting half-hinge II and an externallyscrew-threaded mouthpiece M, terminating in an annular lip L, which forms the entrance to the interior of the flask and against which the disk D, of cork or other suitable substance, is pressed when the stopper is screwed down. To the hinge part H, I pin-joint a collar 0 having an inside flange 0 through which I pass the neck N of the stopper S, which is also provided with a retaining flange or collar N to prevent the detachment of the stopper while permitting its rotation and a traversing movement while being screwed upon the mouthpiece M, for which purpose it is screwthreaded internally.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a bottle having a threaded neck and a ring secured thereto, of a second ring hinged to the first, said second ring having its upper edge turned in to form an annular flange and a stopper having a stem threaded to fit said neck, the said stem being slidable vertically in the second ring, the lower edge of said stem having an outwardly-projecting annular flange adapted to project beneath the flange on the ring, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES WILLIS DIXON.
Witnesses:
T. H. GREEN, H. BERRYMAN.
