UNiTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE,
DAVID B. WARREN, OF WEST PLAINS, MISSOURI.
KNOCKDOWN CAM P-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,631, dated September 11, 1900.
Application filed June 16, 1900.
To n/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, DAVID B. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vest Plains, in the county of Howell and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Camp- Stoves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in portable stoves of the camp-stove pattern.
One object of the invention is to providea stove of this character which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and adapted to be readily and conveniently knocked down or folded for storage and transportation and as readily and conveniently set up for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stove in which the parts are slidably tted together and adapted to be disassembled and packed in ilat form, so as to be easily carried or packed away in a minimum amount of space.
With these and other minor objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement ot' parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularlypointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the stove set up for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation looking toward the side of the stove in which the sliding door is mounted. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a horiz'ontal section. Fig. 5 is a cross-section. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section of the flue.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the front wall, 2 the back wall, and 3 4 the side Walls composingthe frame orbodyofthe stove. These parts are slidably fitted together, being provided with correspondingtougue-and-grooved joints 5, by which they may be conveniently assembled and disassembled and packed together flat for storage or transportation. This wall or body is closed at the top bya sliding cover Serial No. 20,594. (No model.)
6 and at the bottom by a sliding bottom piece or wall 7, having tongue-and-grooved connections 3a with the said side walls 3 and 4, whereby they may be applied and removed in like manner.
The interior of the frame or body is subdivided to form a fire-box 8, an oven 9, and top, bottom, and end flues or passages 10, 11, and 12 in communication with each other, and with an opening 13 in the cover 6, through which the smoke and products of combustion from the fire-box discharge into the flue or smoke-pipe 14, and thence to the atmosphere. This smoke-pipe, which maybe of any desired length and number ot' sections, ofwhich one is shown in the drawings, is composed of side and end walls l5 and 16, having tongueand grooved joints 3b slidably connecting them, and is detachably connected with the cover 6 by means of flanges 17, projecting from the lower ends of the side walls 15 and adapted to slide beneath the free edges of keeper-strips 18, secured to said cover upon opposite sides of the opening 13,
The tire-box 8 is formed between the front, side, to'p, and bottom walls of the body and a vertical partition lS'which latter is provided at its side edges with lianges 19, adapted to engage beneath one of the free edges of each of two vertical keeper-strips 20, centrally secured upon the inner faces of the side walls 3 `and 4, so that it may be applied and removed with facility. The oven 9 is arranged in rear of the fire-box and is composed of top and bottom plates 21 and 22 and side plates 23, sldably and detachably connected by tongue-and-grooved joints 3. These plates are detachably supported in the casing by brackets 24, secured to the side walls 3 and 4, and on which the bottoni plate 22 is adapted to rest, and by flanges 25, projecting from the plates 23 and engaging the adjacentfree edges of the keeper-strips 2O and similar keeperstrips 20, the latter located in the rear fluepassage 12, formed between the rear walls of the body and oven and sides of the oven. By the above construction and arrangement of parts a vertical flue or passage 12 is also formed between the lire-box and oven and coacts with the passages 10, l1, and 12 to permit of the circulation of the heated air, smoke, and products of combustion entirely around IOO the oven, wherebyv rapid andevenfcoolging of,I l and a` connecting portion 37;, inj which the the contents. thereof is insured.
Access to the interior of the fire-box and oven is afforded through openings 26 and 27 in the side Wall 4: of the body. These openings are adapted to be closed by a door 257i,4 slidably mounted in grooves or Ways formed by guide-strips 28, secured to the outer face of the side 4 along the upper and loweredgesf of said openings. The door is provided at each end with a finger-piece 29, whereby it may be slid in either direction toc-lose eii'zllly or both of the door- openings 26 and 2 2. By
moving the door to the right the opening 26 to the fire-box may be exposed Withoutvexposing the opening 27l to the oven, and by moving the door to the left the reverse operation may he effected. Access may also be obtained to the lire-box for the purpose ot' stirring up the fuel through an opening 30 in the front wall l of the bod1y,vwhi`ch opening is adapted to be closed by a pivoted'. door, dam per,or valve 3l. This opening also serves to ad-mit air into the {ire-box to promote conibustion, and the pivotedl valve or damper permits o't' the supply being regu-lated as de- Siredf.
The flow of the hot air, smoke, andA prod'- ucts ot' combustion through the passages-110.-
and l2 is controlled by a damper 32, arranged in front of the openingy 13 and between the top sections 6 and 21 of the stove-body ands oven and carried bya shaft 33, detachably mounted in the sidewalls 3 and 4. A crank or other suitable handle 342- is formed upon onel end of the shaft for convenience in operating the valve from the exterior.
Pot-holes covered by suitable plates orcovers may be provided in the top wally or cover 6 of the body, if desired'.
To support the stove when set up for use, legs 35 are provided and consist ot strips of;`
metal having their longitudinaledges folded` and spread at one end to form keepers to recei-ve the free ends of strips secured transversely to the bottom of the stove, whereby rllhe the legs are detachably fitted thereto. ends of these strips are bent at right angles to form a base 36 to rest on the door or ground y keeper is formed.
rPhe drawings show the stove set up for use. To knoekdown or fold the stove for storage or transportation, it is simply necessary to slide-v thev parts ont of locking engagement,
When they'may be piled fiat on one another and suitably secu red together, as Will be readily understood.. The device is thus adapted to be readily and conveniently set up for use `and folded in a minimum amount of space '15.9. enable itto. be conveniently carried or Shipped.
ent, is
A portable knockdown camp stove, comf Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patprising in its construction a body formed ot front, rearand side Walls having tongue-andgrooved joints slid-"ablyconnecting them, one of saidl side Walls having tire-box and oven openings, lop andbottom Walls slidably con` neetedl to said side Walls and closing the top a11d=botto1nof the body, a partition removably mounted in the body between said [irebox anfl oven openings and forming with the front, side and top and bottom walls ot the bod-ya lire-box, an oven mounted between said partition and the rear Wall of the body `andcomprising top, bottom and side plates detachabl y connected'andsupp ported, fine-passages beingv formedin f-rontv of` and at the rear, t-op and bottom ofA the oven, a smoke pipe ory tine detachably connected to the slid- 'ing top of the body, a damper controlling the passage of' the smoke and' products of combustion through the bott-om and rear flue `passages to the pipe, anda door slidably mountedon the side ofthe body and Inovableinei-therdirection to control said re- Ibox and oven openings, substantially as set my handl in preseneeot two subscribing Wit'- messes.
' DAVID B. WARREN'. \Vitness es:
