SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 656,250, dated August 21, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY MARoUs HoovER,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at N o. 1015 Ward street, Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, .which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding boxes.
The object of my invention is to provide a box that can be folded up into small space when emptied of its contents.
I accomplish my object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box folded. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the box, having one side elevated. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box set up.
In all views similar detail parts are designated by numerals of like character.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the bottom of the box, which is provided with the flanges 2 upon its sides. Each side piece 3 is secured to one of said flanges by a pair of hinges 4. The ends 5 are each attached to the bottom piece by a pair of hinges 6. Each of these end pieces is made of a depth equal to that of the sides and flanges. The top is formed of the two parts 7 and 7 of equal width. The part 7 has secured to its inner edge the strip 8 and hasp 9. The other top part has secured thereon the staple 10 to engage said hasp. Each part of the top is joined to the side pieces at their ends by a link 11. These links are attached by pivots or pins 12.
To set up the box, the one side is elevated, as shown at Fig. 3. The other side is then elevated in like position. The ends are then elevated and the box is in condition to be I the staple.

When the box has been filled, the top sections'are elevated in position, as shown by dotted lines at Fig. 2 and by full lines at Fig.3, and secured by a lock or pin passed through The position assumed by the links when the box is set up adds greatly to the strength of the end pieces should the contents of the box exert pressure thereon. The hasp and staple also add strength to and prevent separation of the top sections. The box when folded takes up but little space and is very compact.
.I am aware that previous to my invention boxes of the folding variety have been patented, but they differ greatlyin construction from my invention.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A folding crate comprising in combination with the bottom having its longitudinal edges flanged, the side pieces hinged to the upper edges of said flanges, the end pieces,of a thickness equal to the height of said flanges, hinged to the upper face of the bottom and between said flanges, the top made of two sections each having their two longitudinal edges free, the links, one end of each being pivoted to the end of ahinged side piece at a'suitable location in from the free edge of said piece, the other end of each link pivoted to the end of a top section in from the outer longitudinal edge of the section, the under faces of said top sections designed to fold flat against the outer faces of the side sections, the outer edges of the top sections and the outer faces of the flanges designed to be flush when the crate is folded, as shown and described.
