Be it known thatl, GEORGE GRIMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at yBaltimore, (Homestead,) in the State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Holders, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates `to Anew and useful improvements in lamp-holders and is especially adapted to prevent accidental tilting or displacement of lamps, &c.

The invention consists in providing a base of suitable form and material adapted to be secured to a table, shelf, or other suitable supporting device and providedvwith braces hinged thereto, connected by chains or other fastening means adapted to inclose the lamp seated upon said base.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed,

and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 2 is a plan View. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 4 is a detail View of a brace detached. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modified form of holder.

Referrin g to said figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a cylinder of metal or other suitable material threaded internally and is provided at its upper end with a iiange 2, adapted to be secured in any suitable manner to a table or other device to which the lamp is to be secured. This cylinder 1 is adapted to extend into a suitable opening formed in said table, &c.

3 is a base of suitable form and material and preferably provided with suitable ornamentations, which may be substantially such as is shown in the accompanying drawings. This base is provided at its center with a circular opening 4, adapted to register with the cylinder 1, hereinbefore referred to, and said base'is secured to the cylinder by means of a screw 5, adapted to project .through the central opening 4 into engagement with the threads of the cylinder 1,`thereby binding the baseto said cylinder.

ably four) of sets of projections 6, each having an eye 7 in the upper end thereof, and within each set of extensions is mounted a vbrace 8, having trunnions 9 at the end thereof, adapted to bear within the eyes of the projections. These braces may be of any desired form and are preferably provided near their upper ends with slots or loops 10, adapted to receive a chain 11,which extends through the slot of each of said braces. The ends of this chain may be detachably-secured together in any desired manner. It will be understood that the braces vare so mounted within the extensions as to swing inward toward the center f the base.

In operation the base is secured tothe table or other device in the manner hereinbefore described. The lamp is then placed upon the center of said base, and the braces 8 are swung inward thereagainst. The chain 11 is then inserted into the slots of the braces and the ends thereof secured together, thereby completely encircling said lamp. It will thus be seen that lateral movement and tilting of the lamp will be prevented.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages Vof my improved lamp-holder will be readily apparent Without requiring an extended explanation. It will be seen that the device is simple of construction, that saidfconstruction permits of its manufacture at small cost, and that it is exceedingly well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Suitable ornamental projections, &c., may be provided upon the base at desired points, as shown.

In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form of holder which is formed of wire. This holder comprises a central plate 12, from which wire strips 13 extend at regular intervals, they being secured at their outer ends to a'prim 14, as shown. The braces 15 are also formed of wire bent around the rim 14 at their ends and curved outward, as shown at 16.

I do not limit myself to any particular form of holder, as the same may, if desired, be square, elliptical, or may have any other contour. Moreover, the recess which I have shown formed within thecenter of the base 3 may be dispensed with, and thereby permit said base to lie flat upon the table or other device to which the holder is secured.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base; of inwardlymovable braces secured thereto; and means for securing the free ends of said braces together.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base; of inwardlymovable braces pivoted thereto; and a dexible connection between the inner ends of said braces.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base; of extensions thereon; braces having trunnions journalcd within the extensions, said braces adapted to swing inwardly upon their pivots; and a flexible connection between the free ends of said braces.

4. rIhe combination with an internallythreaded cylinder; of a base mounted thereon and having an opening therein; means for detachably securing said base to the cylinder; braces secured to the base and adapted to swing inwardly thereon; and a flexible connection between the free ends of the braces.

5. The combination with an internallythreaded flanged cylinder; of a base thereon having an opening therein; means fordetachably securing said base to the cylinder; extensions upon the base; braces having trunnions mounted within said extensions, said braces adapted to move inwardly; and a flexible connection between the free ends of the braces.
