To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROLLO W. BRowNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have in-l a convex contact-face' formed by an elastic pliable wall, a rigid flat rear wall formed by a double thickness of rubber, anda fiat metal plate located within and of about the same diameter as the said wall, the rubber being cast around and completely inclosing the said plate, thereby permanently and rigidly securing the saine within the rear wall, and one or more screws or lugs extending from the outer portion of the rear Wall and secured to or formed with the plate, the convex face and the rear wall being by preference cast integral. W'hile such pad is of great efficiency in use and has thoroughly and effectively iilled a long-felt Want, yet it has been found in practice that there is a feature inherent to such pad that renders it objectionable to some users, arising from the fact that the contactface of the pad being of rubber will, under the action of heat due to use, emit a disagreeabl-e odor, consequent upon perspiration and secretions from the body of the wearer.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome this objection in a simple and effective manner by providing such contactface with a metallic shield or cover which shall be non-corrosive in character and of such flexibility as to obviate any discomfort in the use of the pad, such shield being adapted to yield independently of the pad proper-that is to say, being so assembled with relation to the pad that when the latter yields the shield will also yield, but in an independent manner, so that an ease and comfort in use will be assured that could not result if the metallic shield were firmly at tached to the pad.
IVith this object in View the invention consists, broadly, in the combination, with a yielding pad, of a shield, of non-corrosive metal conforming to the pad.

The invention consists, further, in the combination, with a yielding pad, of a metallic shield inclosing the contact-face of the pad and adapted to yield independently of the pad.
The invention consists, nally, in the novel construction and combination of parts of a truss-pad, as Will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this'specitication, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated a form of embodiment of my invention7 it being understood that the same may be varied without departing from the spirit thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation of the pad. Fig. 2 is a view in plan. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical longitudinal section, showing the arrangement of the dilferL ent parts of the pad.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the pad, consisting of a convex face a and a rear flat wall or back a2, the face and back being bypreferenceformedintegral. Thepadmust be yielding and, as shown, hollow and preferably air-distended. The rear wall a2 is a multiply structure preferably constructedof two thicknesses of rubbervulcanized together, between which is arranged a metallic plate as, to which the screws or other holding devices from the truss-Spring (not shown) may be secured, all of which is old.
Entirely surrounding the face of the pad is a shield co4, preferably of the contour of the pad-and constructed of any suitable non-corrosive metal, by preference of aluminium on account of its lightness and the facility with which it may be stamped or molded. The Shield may be formed in any suitable manner, as by being struck up from a die of the Shape of the pad, and has its edge inturned to form a flange to rest against the rear Wall adjacent to its edge, as shown at a5. The shield and pad are disconnected, so that when IOO pressure is applied to the pad the same will yield, and the shield will also yield, but independently of the pad.
Secured to the rear wall of the pad is a plate a, of the same shape as the rear wall and constructed, preferably, of rubber, the plate being slightly larger than the said Wall, whereby to present a surrounding flange a7, the inner surface of the perimeter of the 'plate a being incut, as at a8, to present a channel in which the flange a5 of the shield may work or move when pressure is applied to the pad. The plate a6 is secured in any suitable manner to the rear wall, as by being vulcanized thereto, or it may be held in place by the screws or rivets a9, which are secured to the plate a3 and which serve to hold the trussspring in place.
, The channel a8, which entirely surrounds the rear wall of the pad, also provides a means by which any accumulation of moisture, either upon the exposed surface of the pad or between the under surface of the shield and the pad, may be caught and removed, thereby presenting a clean and thoroughly-sanitary device.
By the employment of the metallic shield, as described, the objection urged against the employment of rubber, due to its odor, will be entirely overcome.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is-` l. The combination with a yielding pad hav-A ing al peripheral channel, of a metallic shield inclosing the convex face of the pad and provided With a iange engaging the channel, substantially as described.
2. A truss-pad comprising a hollow, permanently-inflated structure, the rear wall of which is provided with a metallic plate, a metallic shield inclosing the convex face of the pad, and having its edge inturned and bearing against the rear Wall of the pad, and a i plate slightly larger, circumferentially, than the rear of the pad, between which and the rear wall of the pad the flange of the shield may work, substantially as described.
3. A truss-pad comprising a hollow, permanently-intlated structure, the rear wall of which is provided with a metallic plate, a metallic shield inclosing the convex face of the pad, and having'its edge inturned and bearing against the rear Wall'of the pad, and a plate slightly larger, circumferentially, than the rear of the pad, and having its inner face channeled out to provide space in which the ange of the shield may work, substantially as described.
