NITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
FRANCISCO-E. FONSECA, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
WRAPPER FOR CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,549, dated August 7, 1900. Application filed March 15, 1900. Serial No- 8,786. (No model.)
To ttZZ whom it may cancer/e:
Be it known that I, FRANCISCO E. FONSECA, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved rapper for Cigars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
One purpose of the invention is to provide a protective wrapper or cover for cigars and a means whereby the ends of the protective wrapper or cover may be twisted or manipulated in such a manner that said protective wrapper or cover will be held in position upon the body of the cigar even if the cigar be roughlyhandled and, furthermore, to so form the ends of the protective wrapper or cover that they will serve as cushions, preventing the cigar from being damaged at such points should it fall from a box or other support or from the hands of its holder.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct a protective wrapper or cover for cigars that descriptive or other advertising matter may be advantageously displayed thereon.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indi-' cate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarinclosed in the improved protective wrapper or cover. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cigar and protective wrapper or cover for the same, the wrapper or cover being partially sealed and partially open; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cigar and the improved protective wrapper or cover therefor, one end being completely sealed and the other end partially sealed.
The protective wrapper or cover A is pref erably made of paper and is of such dimensions that it will receive the entire cigar B and completely conceal the cigar when the wrapper has been secured in place thereon. The protective wrapper or cover A is of such length that it will extend beyond the ends of the cigar B, and the ends 10 of said protective wrapper or cover A are out at an angle or inclination, so that the portions of the protective wrapper or cover projecting beyond the ends of the cigar when the body of the cigar is enveloped may be twisted together, forming practically tapering cords, as shown at the right in Fig. 3, thus securing the body por tion of said wrapper or cover in position'on the body portion of the cigar. When the twist or cord above mentioned has been formed, said twist or cord is wrapped back upon the protecting wrapper or cover, forming a coil 12, (shown at the left in Figs. 1, 2, and 3,) and the free ends of the twisted portions or cords 11 of the protective wrapper or cover are passed beneath sundry of the coils when the complete number of coils 12 have been made, as illustrated at 13 in Figs. 2 and 3. Under this arrangement of the protective wrapper or cover the body of the wrapper or cover is made to hug the cigar closely from end to end, and the coils 12 at the ends of the cigar constitute cushions which prevent the end portions of the cigar from being fractured should they strike a surface when leaving the hand or any support provided for them.
It is obvious that the outer face 14 of the protecting-wrapper may be utilized as a display-surface for advertising matter, if so desired, or may bear the name of the seller or the receiver.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Acigar-package, comprisinga cigar, and the containing protecting-cover,the said cover extending normally beyond the ends of the cigar and having its extended ends twisted to form practically cords which are wound back upon the cover and secured.
2. Acigar-package, comprising a cigar, and the inclosing protecting-cover having its ends extending beyond the ends of the cigar, each of said ends being sloped or inclined to a point and twisted to form practically a tapering cord which is wound back upon the cover and secured.
3. A cigar-package, consisting of a cigar, and the inclosing protecting-cover having its ends extending beyond the ends of the cigar each of the said ends being sloped orinclined wound back upon the cover and has its exto a point and twisted to form practically tatremity passed under sundry of the coils. pering cords, which are wound back upon the In testimony whereof I have signed my cover and have their extremities passed under name to this specification in the presence of 5 sundig of the coils. two subscribing witnesses.
4. cigar-package, comprisinga ci ar, and
the inclosing protecting-cover, said co ver hav- FRANCISCO FONSEOA' ing one end extending beyond the cigar, the Witnesses: said extended end being pointed and twisted J. FRED ACKER,
10 to form practically a tapering cord which is JNO. M. BITTER.
