Beit known that I, FRANKLIN D. WALLACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheatland, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Burglar or Fire Alarm, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in burglar or fire alarms.

The object of my invention is to produce a cheap, compact,'and efficient device which may be used either as a burglar-alarm or which may be used as a fire-alarm, the same being of such form that when used as a iiref alarm it may be sunk into the walls or ceilings and be very inconspicuous.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device in position for use as a burglar-alarm. Fig. 2 is a section view thereof. Fig. 3 isa front elevation of the ldevice when arranged as a tire-alarm. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section thereof. Y

In the drawings, 5 indicates a small openended casing, the open end of which is closed by a suitable cover 6, said cover being preferably of thin sheet metal which may be stamped into proper form. Cover 6 is provided with an opening 7, which is formed by throwing down toward the under side a tongue 8 and throwing up toward the upper side a pair of perforated ears 99. Mounted within casing 5 and longitudinally movable therein is a terminal 10, the stem of which passes through a slot 8', formed in the free end of tongue 8. Terminal 10 is provided opposite opening 7 with a head 11, having upon its under side a beveled surface 12. Head 11 is provided upon its outer face with an opening, in which may be removably secured a pin 13, which pin is adapted to engage a cross-bar 14, which may be removably mounted in and between the perforated ears 9. Pin 13 or bar 14, or both, should be formed of easily-fusible material. Terminal 10 may be of sufficient weight to normally drop against terminal 15, which projects into one end of the casing 5, or a suitable spring 16 may be provided for that purpose. Securedto the terminal 10 and passing through a slot 17, formed in the side of the casing, is one wire 18 of a suitit is to be used as a burglar-alarm, casing 5 is sunk into the hinge side of the door-casing,

Ears 9 are bentdown flat, as shown in Fig. 1, and finger 2O is secured to the hinge edge of the door in such position that when the door is closed its beveled end will engage the beveled face 12 of terminal 10 and raise said terminal Ior force it against the action of spring 16 away from terminal 15; but as soon -as the door is partially opened terminal 10 will by the withdrawal of the finger 2O be released and allowed to again comeinto contact with the terminal 15. When the device is to be used as a tire-alarm, ears 9 are bent out, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, pin 13 inserted in head 11, and bar 14 inserted in ears 9 beneath said pin 18, either or both of said parts to be made of easily-fusible material. Upon an increase of temperature beyond any desired point these fusible 'portions will break down, and thus allow the terminal 10 to come into contact with terminal 15.

In the drawings I have shown the device arranged for open-circuit work; but it will be readily understood that by a mere rever sion of parts-as, for instance, the shifting ot' terminal 15 to the opposite end of terminal 10-the device may be made available .for closed-circuit work.

I claim as my invention*v 1. As an article of manufacture, a casing, a movable terminal mounted therein, a coperatingtermiual carried by said casing, a head carried by said movable terminal, said head being adapted to be acted upon and'moved with relation to the cooperating terminal by means of a finger forced into engagement therewith, and means carried by said casing for supporting a fusible bar in position to engage a portion ofsaid head.

2. As an article of manufacture, a casing 5, a cover G therefor having an openinglead- `ing into Said easing, a pair of perforated ears adjacent said opening, a movable terminal mounted in said casing, a cooperating terminal, and means carried by said movable terminal for receiving a removable pin, the arrangement being` such that said pin may be engaged by a fusible bar carried by said ears and therebynormally held either out of or in engagement with the cooperating terminal.
