Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, AUGUST LoUIs VAN HAUrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar- Alarms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in burglar alarms and has for its primary ob ject to provide a simple and efficient elcctrical alarm device to be operated upon the opening of a door whereby the electrical circuit will be closed and the alarm sounded.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an oscillatory contact plate mounted upon a suitable base and insulated therefrom, binding posts upon the base extending through openings in the contact plate, one terminal of the circuit being connected to one of the binding posts and the other terminal to said plate, and means to hold said plate out of engagement with the contact posts.
Still another object of the invention resides in the provision of an electrical alarm device of the above character connected by means of wires to a push button and contact plate arranged adjacent to the door, said button being engaged by the door to close the circuit when the door is opened, the alarm device including means whereby the circuit is closed when an attempt is made to cut or break said connecting wires.
With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrange ments of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For afull understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved alarm device showing c1rou1t connections and the wires connecting the clevice to the door operated push button; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the circuit closing device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and desigmeans oi a suitable nut 10.
Binding posts 11 are arranged upon the base plate 5 upon opposite sides of the central bolt 7 and extend through the openings 12 in the contact plate. Two of the binding posts 11 are provided to insure the closing of the circuit even in the event that one of the binding posts should be broken off, and to also increase the surface of contact between said posts and the movable plate 9. These openings are of considerably greater diameter than the binding posts 11. To one ofthe posts 11 the circuit wire 13 is attached and extends to a suitable bell or other alarm device indicated at 1 1. This device is connected by means of the wire 15 to one terminal of the battery 16, a Wire 17 connecting the other battery terminal to the contact plate 9.
A metal bar 18 is mounted for sliding movement in a guide 19 secured to the under side of the base plate 5. Upon one end of this bar a block of insulating material 20 is secured, and is provided with a notch or recess 21 to receive an arm or extension 22 formed upon one end of the contact plate 9. A coil spring 23 is arranged upon the bar 18 beneath the block 20 and bears against the base plate 5 at one of its ends and against the upturned end of the bar 18 to which the block 20 is secured, at its other end. One end of a wire 2 1 is connected to the contact plate 9 adjacent the binding post 11 to which the circuit wire 13 is conncctul, and a similar wire 25 is connected at one of its ends to the movable metal bar 18.
In the use of my improved alarm device, the door is provided with a presser plate or lug indicated at 26 which is adapted to engage a push button 27 to which the circuit wire 24L is connected. The other wire 25 is connected to a stationary contact plate 28. It will thus be seen that when the door is opened the button 27 is Compressed to engage the same with the plate 28 whereby the electric circuit is connected through the wire 2%, contact plate 9, post 11, Wire 13, bell 14 and wire 15 to the battery, through the wire 17 connected to the other terminal of the battery, the plate 9 and the other binding post 11, base plate 5 and movable plate 18 through the wire 25 to the contact plate 28. It is to be understooCL that the wire 25 COIlIlBCtiIlg the contact plate 28 with the plate 18 is sulliciently tight to prevent sliding movement of the plate 18 whereby the contact plate 9 is held out of engagement with the posts '11. Should an attempt be made to break or cut either of the wires 2% or 25, suflicient pull is exerted upon said wires to oscillate the plate upon the pivot bolt 7 and engage the same with the posts 11 wherebythe circuit is connected through the wires 24; and 25, plate 18, contact plate, 9, post 11, wires 13 and 15 to the battery and through wires 17 from the contact plate to the other terminal of'the battery, thus ringing the bell and sounding the alarm.
From the'foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of my improved burglar alarm will be clearly understood.
The device is extremely simple and durable in construction and eflicient in its operation and may be manufactured and installed at comparatively small cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form and construction of the various elements employed it will be understood that the invention is susceptible of considerable modification without departing from the essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described .the invention what is claimed is:
1. In an alarm of the character described, a base plate, a contact plate mounted to oscillate thereon and insulated therefrom, binding posts on said base plate, an alarm device, an electric circuit therefor including a battery and conducting wires connecting one of said posts and the contact plate to the alarm device and batte-ry respectively, an electrical connection between the alarm device and the battery, means electrically connected to the base plate and en aging said contact plate to move the same into engage-V ment with the binding posts, said means be ing insulated from the contact plate, and conducting Wires connecting said 7 latter means and the contact plate to a circuit closer.
2. In an alarm device of the character described, a base plate, a contact plate mounted to oscillate on the base plate and insulated therefrom, posts mounted upon the base plate and adapted to be engaged by the contact plate, an alarm device, a circuit closer, means electrically connected to the base plate and engaging said contact plate to more the same into engagement with said posts, said means being insulated from the contact plate, an electric circuit including wires connecting the circuit closer to said last named means and the contact plate respectively, and additional wires connecting one of said posts and the contact plate to the alarm device through a battery in the circuit. 7
In an alarm device of the character described, a base plate, a contact plate mounted to oscillate on the base plate and insulated therefrom, said contact plate being provided with an opening, a binding post mounted in the base plate extending through said opening, means electrically connected to the base plate to move said contact plate into engagement with the binding post, said means being insulated from the contact plate, an alarm device, an electric circuit therefor including a battery, wires connecting the battery and the alarm deviceto the binding post and the contact plate respectively, a connection between the battery and the alarm device, a circuit closer adapted to be actuated in the opening of a door to close the circuit, and connecting wires between the circuit closer and the contact plate and the means for moving said plate.
4. In an alarm device of the scribed, a base plate, a contact plate mounted to oscillate upon the base plate and insulated therefrom, posts mounted upon the base plate, said contact plate being provided with openings through which said posts extend, an alarm device, an electric circuit therefor including a battery and wires connected to one of the posts and the contact plate respectively, a connection be tween the battery and the alarm device, a spring held movable member electrically connected to the base plate and engaging said contact plate but insulated from the latter, a circuit closer adapted to be operated in the opening of the door to close the circuit, and Wires connecting said circuit closer to the movable member and to the contact plate respectively, said contact plate being oscillated when said latter wires are pulled to close the electric circuit independently of said circuit closer.
5. In an alarm of the character described, a base plate, a contact plate mounted to oscillate thereon, and insulated from the base plate, said plate being provided With openings upon opposite sides of'its fulcrum, posts mounted upon the base plate and disposed throu h said openings to permit of a limited oscillatory movement of the contact plate, an alarm device, an electric circuit therefor ncluding a battery and Wires coniso nected to one of said posts and to the contact plate respectively, a bar slidably mounted upon said. base plate, an insulating block fixed to one end of said bar and engaging one end of the contact plate, a spring mounted upon the end of the bar to yieldingly hold the same against sliding movement, a circuit closer adapted to be operated by a door when the same is opened, and additional wires connecting said circuit closer to the contact plate and to said sliding bar respectively whereby said plate is moved into contact with said posts when the last named wires are pulled to close the circuit independently of said circuit closer.
