STOCK-WEANER.

To all whom t may concern.-

Beit known that I, HIRAM R. LOOBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loraine, in the county of Mitchell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Weaners and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to weaning devices for stock and 'may be applied to either the parent or the offspring to prevent abstraction of the lacteal iiuid from the udder by either.

The purpose of the invention is to devise a device of the character and for the purpose aforesaid which will be simple, effective, light,

not interfere with grazing or feeding, and

which can be easily and quickly placed in position without the use of tools and adapted to be readily removed and applied to another animal.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and to the drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modification, parts of the shield being broken away.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The shield l, preferably of sheet metal, although any material may be employed, is of oblong form and has a notch 2 in its upper longitudinal edge at a point about midway of its ends to receive the lower end of the septum narium of the animal to which the device is applied. A wire 3 is fitted to three edges of the shield by being inclosed in rolled portions thereof. The ends of the wire project into the notch 2 and are bent upon themselves to provide blunted terminals 4 and 5, between which the partition of the nose is clamped. The end 4 is fixed and the terminal 5 movable toward and from the extremity d. The unconined portion 6 of the wire at arm 6 is resilient, being integral with the sinl gle wire 3, which reinforces the three edges of the shield, and, as shown in Fig. 2, it is pivoted, being looped into the projecting end of the longitudinal wire.

A clamp device S connects the arm 6 with the shield l and serves to hold the points 4 and 5 against opposite sides of the septum narium when the weaner is in position. In its simplest form the clamp device 8 is a short length of wire passed through an opening in the shield and havingits end portions brought together upon opposite sides of the shield and arm and the terminals twisted.

The device is applied to the animal in such a manner as to have the partition separating the nostrils come between the points 4 and 5, which are brought together to clamp the said partition between them, the ends of the folded wire 8 being twisted to hold the device in place. By loosening the wire 8 the points 4 and 5 can be separated to admit of the removal of the weaner and its application to anotheranimal. Thewire,itwillbeobserved, reinforces the shield and admits of its being formed of exceedingly light sheet material.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. A weaner, comprising a shield, a wire reinforcing three edges of the shield and having a terminal adapted to press against one side of the septum narium, an arm spaced from the fourth edge of the shield and having its horizontal. portion slidably fitted to a longitudinal edge portion thereof and reinforcing it and terminating in a point to press against the opposite side of the septum narium, and a clamping device between the arm and shield to hold the weaner in place and the septum narium clamped between the gripping-terminals of the wire and arm, substantially as described.

A weaner, comprisin ga shield havin g an IOO 4 into a roll, a Wire fitted in the rolled edges of edge portion cut away to receive the septum narium, a wire applied to three edges of the shield and having an end projecting into the said cut-away part, an arm spaced from the fourth edge of the shield and connected with the said wire and movably fitted to the upper'longitudinal edge of the shield at one side of the cnt-away part and extending into the latter, and a clamp device between the shield and arm, substantially as described.

an edge portion out away to receive the septum narium, and having three edges formed the shield and having an end projecting into the cut-away part thereof andblunted, an arm spaced from the fourth edge and having its horizontal portion slidably fitted in the y roll at the top edge of the shield and to one side of the cut-away portion, the projecting end being blunted, and a wire or analogous device connecting the arm with the shield, v substantially as specified. 4. A weaner, comprising a shield having an edge portion cut away to receive the septum 1 narium, a wire spun into three edges of the shield and having its ends extendinginto the i cut-away part, a portion of the wire being 1 spaced from the fourth edge of the shield and ..an end portion being movable,and a clamp del Vice connecting the shield with the movable part of the wire, substantially as specied.
