ALL OF SAME- PLACE.
RIBBON-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,191. dated October 27,1885;
Application filed May 1, 1885. Serial No. 104,110: (No model.\
To ctZl whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES ELLIOT McMUR- TRIE, of.Saxt-on, in the county of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon- Reels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to reels for holding bolts of ribbon, braid, and the like, so that any desired quantity of the ribbon may be reeled off and cut for sale or use, and the loose end will be held firmly; and the invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device for this purpose.
The invention consists in particular constructions and combinations of parts of the ribbon-reel, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all .the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ribbon-reel with a bolt of ribbon held thereby. Fig. 2 is acentral longitudinal sectional elevation thereof, taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a modified construction of the reelframe in front view, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof, with the cross bars in section.
Referring first't-o Figs. land 2, the letters A B indicate the opposite side bars of the ribbon-reel frame, which bars are bent at a right angle to form the inturned foot-pieces a b, respectively, which have lengthwise open slots or slits formed in them for the passage of the milled-head screws'G O, which pass freely through the outer plate, D, and screw into the inner plate, E, which latter plate preferably has opposite side flanges, e e,.which project outward at each edge of plate D to its front The plates D E and the parts a, b of the sides A. B, which are clamped between plates D E by the screws 0 0, form the lower cross-bar of the reel-frame, and by loosening the screws 0 G the parts a b may be drawn out or pushed in more or less between the plates D E to make the'foot of the reel-frame wider or narrower to accommodate the width of the ribbon bolt to be held by the reel. Each of the frame-bars A B has formed in it at the upper part a lengthwise slot, F, preferably having an enlargement at f, through which the heads or end buttons, 971, of the ribbon-clamp bar may be passed, and so that the reduced neck portions h of the bar may be entered within the slots F, and the head parts 9 h of the bar will prevent accidental spreading or convergence of the sides A B of the frame.
As best seen in Fig. 2, the ribbon-clamp bar consists of a tubular portion, G, on which the head and neck 9 g are formed, anda rod portion, H, on which the head and neck h h are formed, and which portion His fitted snugly into the part G, but so it may be drawn out or pushed in to adjust the ribbon-clamp barG H, accordingly as the foot-plates a b may be adjusted in the clamp-plates D E, and so as to hold the bars A B parallel with each other and at any desired distance apart,as the width of the ribbon bolt shall require.
The letter I indicates the block or drum on which the ribbon J is wound, and the block is pierced centrally at opposite sides, as at t t, to receive the inturned ends 70 k of the elastic arms K K,which are secured to the framebars A B at Z Z, and have bends m m, forming projections, which may be taken hold of by the fingers for drawing the end journals, k k,
from the holesii of the ribbon-block, to allow the block to drop from the reel-frame when the ribbon has been unwound from it, and
also to allow the journals k I. to be entered into opposite holes t i of-a full bolt of ribbon, for holding it in the reelframe. The journalsk 70 pass through holes a b of the side bars, A B.
The letters L L indicate elastic connections between the heads of the springarms KK,
and the heads 9 h of the ribbon-clamp bar. I show these connections L as bands of rubber; but they may be spiral springs. I prefer to connect the elastic bands L to the arms K K by passing them over or.around small grooved pulleys M, placed loosely on the arms. evident that as the loose end j of the ribbon J is pulled to unwind the ribbon from the block or drum I the elastic connections Lwill draw the clamp-bar G H to the ribbon re-' maining on the block I, so as to prevent unreeling of the ribbon except as it is wanted It is for sale or use. Holes (1 b may be made in the top of frame-bars A B, in which a crossbar, 0, (shownin dotted lines in Fig. 2,) may be fastened when the ribbon-reel is not required 5 0 lbe adjustable to different widths of ribbon 0 ts.
At 1? is shown a hook, which is fastened to the foot-plate D, and may serve to hang the reel up by in a show case or window to display the ribbon on the reel.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the reel-frame is shown as made of opposite side bars, A B, connected together by rigid cross-bars G H, so asto re- .7 main at a given width to suit one size of ribbon bolt, the bars-A B having slots, F f,
substantially like the slots of bars A B, hereinbefore described. The slots F may not have the enlargements f at the ends, as the head andneck parts of 2c the ribbon-clamp bar may be separate headed pins screwed through the slots Finto the ends -=of the clamp-bar, as will readily be under stood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. A ribbon-reel comprising opposite framebarsA B, slotted at F. and having interned I and slotted end parts a b, clamp-plates D E, and screws 0 O, the adjustable ribbon-clamp bar G H, elastic arms K K, having journals k k for the ribbon bolt, and elastic connections drawing the clamp-bar to the ribbon bolt, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the 'reel frame bars A B, slotted at F, elastic arms K K, having journals k k, and the ribbon-clamp bar G H, of elastic connections, as at L L, between the clamp-bar and arms K K, substantially as herein set forth.
3. 'The combination, with the reel frame bars A B, slotted at F, arms K K, having journals k k, the ribbon-clamp bar G H and elastic connections, as at L L, of the rollers M on journals k, substantially as herein set forth.
4. The combination, with the reel frame bars AB, of elastic arms K K, secured at Z to the bars, and having journals k k passing through the bars, and provided also with bends or projections, as at m, forming grasps to withdraw the journals from the ribbon bolts, substantially as herein set forth.
