Description

'No. 654,003. Patented July l7, I900. B. JEHTZEN 8:. 0. HUGE.
LOCK.
(Application filed Kay 16, 1899.)
(no Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
RUDOLPH JENTZEN AND CARL HOGE, OF ALTONA, GERMANY.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,003, dated July 1'7, 1900.
Application filed May 15, 1899. Serial No. 716,820. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RUDOLPH JENTZEN and CARL new, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Altona, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention relates to safety mechanism adapted to be applied to any kind of locks and to be locked by grooved keys, so that they can be opened only by means of the keys which have been employed for locking them.
The improvements consist in the features of construction and combination of parts fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in appended claims.
In order that the invention may be the more readily understood and carried into effect,"
reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a padlock provided with our improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 shows a section on line a: a: of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is an inner view of the mechanism in inoperative position, one of theplates of the padlock being moved aside. Fig. 5 shows the same mechanism actuated by means of a key to permit the introduction of a shouldered pin.
In the drawings like numerals refer to like parts throughout all the figures.
Referring to the several views of the drawings, 1 represents the box or casing of a padlock, having two plates 2 3 riveted or otherwise secured onto the cylindrical box or casing and provided with ears or extensions 8 8, perforated or apertured to receive pins 4 4, preferably made one with an eye 5, carrying a ring 7, receiving the end link of a chain 9, the other end of which carries a pin 10, provided with shoulders or circular steps, as hereinafter described. The bottom plate 3 is provided with a circular opening 11 and an opening 12 for the passage of the key.
To the center of the plate 2 and within the padlock is secured a shaft 13, over which are fitted the extensions 15 of sections 14 14 14 14 14, freely sliding over each other and moving about said shaft 13. The extension 15 of each section is provided with gear-teeth, and each section has four openings 21 21 21 21 which when in inoperative positioningister with each other. The openings indicated by numeral 21 register with opening 11 in the plate 3 and with a recess 2, provided in plate 2. All the openings 21 have equal diameter except opening 21 of section 14 adapted to slide over the inner surface of plate 2, said opening being of smaller diameter than the others.
Each toothed extension 15 of the sections 14 meshes with a corresponding segment16, and said segments are equal in number with the sections 14 and are fitted against each other and over a stationary pin 17, about which they may be moved. Between each pair of adjacent segments 16 is inserted a disk 19, and each segment 16 is providedwith a groove 40, engaged bya spring 20, attached to a rod 22 and fitted around a rod 22, said rods being fixed to the inner side of the plate 2.
45 is a stop-pin for the key, and 18 the pintle on which the key is fitted when applied to the lock.
The pin 10 has annular shoulders of difierent diameters, and upon inserting it in the look through the opening 11 the first shoulder corresponds to the thickness of plate 3, each of the five following shoulders corresponding to the five sections 14 to 14 and the end shoulrested by plate 14 the opening 21 of which is too small to permit the passage of the end of the pin. 7 grooved key is fitted to the pintle 18, said key having branches corresponding to the thickness of the sections 14 to 14 and of proper length to engage the sides or edges of segments 16, so that upon turning the key the latter will be rotated a distance corresponding to the length of the respective branches and the segments will in turn rotate the plates 14 to the same extent or until the Before inserting the pin 10 a large opening in the plate 1& is brought into line with the corresponding openings in the other plates, and thus permit the insertion of the pin to the full depth. Upon Withdrawing the key the springs 20 pressing on the segments bring them into their normal posi tions so far as permitted or until the edges of the openings in the sections engage the ad jacent shoulders in the pin 10, thus preventing the withdrawal of the latter except through the medium of the locking-key, whereby the parts are returned to their registering positions.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is
1. In a safety mechanism for looks, the combination with a casing having plates 2 and 3, of a shaft centrally mounted in one of said plates, a plurality of segments mounted on said shaft and each provided with a toothed extension and having a series of openings therein, one of said openings in one of the segments being of less diameter than the other openings, the pin 10 adapted to engage said openings and means engaging the toothed extensions of said segments whereby the latter may be operated.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination With the casing, a central shaft in said casing, a series of segments mounted on said shaft and having toothed extensions, a pin '17 in the casing, a series of toothed segments loosely mounted on said pin, and adapted to engage the extensions aforesaid, disks between said lastnamed segments, springs for operating the latter secured to the casing, a key-slot in one of the plates, a key-pintle, and suitable stopfor the key, fixed in the ease, substantially as set forth.
