Be it known that I, EMIL LUNDQUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Ash Pan and Sifter, of which the following is a specification.

My object is to provide a combined ashpan and ash-sitter of improved construction adapted to be placed in the ash-chamber of a stove to catch the ashes as they fall from the grate and be readily withdrawn and operate as a handy and cleanly means for sifting the ashes before emptying the pan.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device in its collapsed form for insertion into the ashchamber of a stove; Fig. 2, a similar View of the same in its extended form for use in sifting the ashes; Fig. 3, a sectional view of the device extended, and Fig. 4 a broken section taken on line 4 of Fig.

A is a receptacle open at the top and provided at its bottom with a door A, hinged at one edge at a and provided at its opposite edge with a catch 1) to engage a bead b or other shoulder on the body of the receptacle to hold the door when closed with desired security. The side edges of the door A have flanges c to overlap the lower edges of the re ceptacle to prevent the escape of dust when the door is closed. The upper edges of the receptacle A have inwardly-extending beads cl. Sliding in the receptacle A is a receptacle B, which fits within the beads (Z and is provided around its lower edges with outwardly-extending beads e, forming shoulders to engage the shoulders formed by the beads d and prevent separation of the receptacles. In opposite sides of the receptacle B are inclined bases f, giving to the interior the shape of a hopper. In its collapsed or telescoped condition (illustrated in Fig. 1) the device may be passed through the ash-chamber door of a stove to operate as an ash-pan to catch the ashes as they fall through the grate, The device may be withdrawn by means of the handle D, and the latter may be turned to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 for use in carrying the device, the ends operating to clamp the sides of the receptacle A beneath the projections A to prevent the said receptacle from slipping downward. To sift the ashes in the hopper-receptacle B, the handle is turned first to extend in the horizontal plane in the direction opposite that shown in Fig. l to cause the ends 70 of the handle to rest on the platforms or shoulders 'II, and the handle is then turned upward to cause the said ends to slide upon the platforms and raise the receptacle B. In the rise of the receptacle B the screen-handle 0' assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. The handle is then moved back and forth to reciprocate the screen 0 and sift the ashes. The door A is opened to discharge the refuse ashes, and the cinders remaining in the hopper B are poured out. With reasonably-careful handling no dust will escape during the sifting operation. On turning down the handle to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1 the receptacle B will drop into the receptacle A for reinsertion into the ash-chamber of the stove, the handle C folding into the receptacle A, as shown in Fig. 1.

\Vhile I prefer to construct my device in all its parts as shown and described, it may be modified in the matter of details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the claims.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a combined ash pan and si'fter, the combination of a lower receptacle having a door at its base, an upper receptacle telescoping into the lower receptacle, a handle on the upper receptacle, and a sliding screen in the base of the upper receptacle provided with an operating handle, substantially as described.

2. In a combined ash pan and sifter, the combination of a lower receptacle having, a door at its base, an upper hopper-shaped receptacle telescoping into the lower receptacle, a handle on the upper receptacle, and a sliding screen in the base of the upper receptacle provided with an operating-handle, substantially as described.

3. In a combined ash pan and Sifter, the combination of a lower receptacle having a door at its base, an upper receptacle telescoping into the lower receptacle and inseparably connected therewith, a handle on the upper receptacle, and a sliding screen in the base of the upper receptacle provided with an operating-handle, substantially as described.

4:. In a combined ash pan and sitter, the combination of a lower receptacle having a door at its base, shoulders t' on the lower receptacle, an upper receptacle telescoping into the lower receptacle, a sliding screen in the base of the upper receptacle provided with an operating-handle, and a handle D- having shoulders is pivotally connected with the upper receptacle, and ends is to slide upon the shoulders 2' and raise the upper receptacle, substantially as described.

5. In a combined ash pan and sitter, the combination of a lower receptacle having a door at its base, an upper receptacle telescoping into the lowerreceptacle, a handle on the upper receptacle, and a sliding screen in the base of the upper receptacle provided with an operating-handle O hinged thereto to extend outward when the upper receptacle is raised and to fold into the lower receptacle when the receptacles are telescoped, substantially as described.

6. The combination of the receptacle A having the door A, inwardly-extending beaded edges d and shoulders 'i, the hopper-shaped receptacle B, having the beaded lower edges 2, sliding screen C having the handle 0', and handle D having theshoulders Z and ends'k, all constructed to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
