V L. G. Kurtzeborn 3% w v wfli parts in the several views 'facets a Pn rnrrr LOUIS G. KURTZEBORN, OF STJLOUIS, MISSOURI.
srncrrrca'rzorr forming si-t '0? Letters rant no. 653,517, dated July 1c, 1900.
Application filed July 21,1899,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis G. KURTZEBORN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, in the State ofMissouri, have invented a certain new and useful Game Counter, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable an y one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
While my counter may be used in scoring many diiferent kinds of adapted for scoring a game of golf.
My invention consists in various novel features and details of construction, all of which are described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims affixed hereto.
In the accompanying drawings,- wh. cir-illus trate one form of gamecounter made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevatlon. Fig. 2 is a detailed View ofthe frame of the counter. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 5 is a top plan view, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged section taken in the direction or" the line 6 6 of Fig. ti.
Like marks of reference refer to similar of the drawings.
A are indicating-wheels, the peripheries of which are preferablyformed into facets'ct. The
on each wheel are preferably fourteen in number and are numbered from .3 to 16, as shown in Fig. 5, as it is seldom that a hole is made in less than three strokes or requires more than sixteen strokes. However, the number of facets and the mode of numbering them may be variedat pleasure.
To each of the indicating wheels A is secured a ratchet-wheel B. Each of the ratchetwheels Bis provided with teeth (9, corresponding in number to the facets (L of the indicating-wheels A. The ratchet-wheels 13 are preferably secured to the indicating-wheels A, as shown in Fig. 6, by setting the said ratchetwheels 15 into a recess in the indicatingovheels A and securing them in place by cement (J. In addition to this rivets 0 may also be used to secure the said wheels together. The wheels A and 15 are held in a frame D, which is provided with arms (1, by means of arodor spindlc E. The spindle E is preferably provided games, it is especially and and rotated by the finger erial No. 724,601. (NomodeL) atits upper end with a ring or loop e, by means of which the counter maybe suspended from a chain or cord. Carried by the frame D, and preferably formed integral therewith, are spring detents l which engage with the ratchet-wheels B. The frame Dis numbered adjacent to the wheels A, as shown in Fig.--1,
so as to identify the various indicating-wheels.
These numbers are preferably placed onthe.
frame D by stamping or engraving them in the metal of the frame and filling thegrooves thus formed with enamel G, as shown in Fig. 3. I prefer to make the wheels A of celluloid .or some similarv substance, so as to be light neatin appearance, and form the ratchetwheels B ofsome durable metal, so as not to be readily worn by the spring-detents F.
Any desired indicatingwheel A can readily be rotated to indicate the desired amount by the thumb and finger of one hand, while the frame D is grasped by thev other hand. I am aware that game-counters have been heretofore made in which a number of indicating-wheels provided with n umbers on their peripheries were secured beneath a sightopening in a table and operated by means of push-buttons or keys, and therefore do not claim the same.
Having fully describedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a game-counter, the combination with a plurality of indicating wheels provided with numbers on their peripheries and arranged upon a common axis, of a frame carrying said indicating-wheels, said frame being arranged to expose the periphery of each of said wheels at diametrically-opp0site points whereby said wheels may be grasped and thumb, and spring-detents carried by said frame for holding said indicating-wheels in the desired position.
2. In a game-counter, the combination with a plurality of indicating-wheels provided with numbers on their peripheries and arranged upon a common axis, of a frame carrying said wheels, said frame being arranged to expose each of said wheels at diametricallyoppositc points whereby said wheels may be grasped and rotated by the fingerand thumb, and spring-detonts formed integral with said frame for retaining said Wheels in the desired position.
3. In a game-counter, the combination with a plurality of indicating-wheels provided with numbers on their peripheriesand arranged on a common axis, of a U-shaped frame carrying said wheels, said frame being arranged to expose more than half the periphery of each of said. wheels whereby said wheels may be grasped and rotated by the finger and thumb, and spring-deients carried by-said frame for retaining said Wheels in the desired position. I
4. In a gam e-connte' the combination With a plurality of indicating-Wheels provided with nn'inbers on their peripheries and arranged'npon a, common axis, of a ratchetwheel secured to each of said indicatingwheeis, a ill-shaped frame carrying said indicating and ratchet Wheels, said frame being arranged to expose more than half the periphery of each of the indicating wheels whereby said wheels may be grasped and rotated by the finger and thumb, and springdetents formed integral with said frame and engaging said ratchet-wheels.
In testimony. whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal in the presence of the two subscribing Witnesses.
